I need to replace my handbrake shoes on my F355. Dealer wants $63.45. After market vendors want over $40 per shoe. There are four shoes. Most cars, including Porsches, etc., sell all four as a "per axle" kit and typically all four cost $40! Looking at the shoes they look like ordinary brake shoes. Has anyone discovered the source or seen if the match up with something else? I suspect they're from another car.

The shoes should be able to be relined with new friction material at a commercial brake/clutch shop. Cost?

complaining about a $160 repair on a Ferrari. Priceless. Just feel lucky that there isn't an extra zero (or two) on the end of that...

I don't blame him for asking the question- ferrari or not, money is money and sometimes (often/usually/almost always???) we're getting ripped off just because some part comes in a yellow box with a prancing horse. At some point it goes beyond money...it's principal. Where I can and within reason, I'd like to save money as well...I started by keeping my $1,000 factory battery maintainer in it's leather suitcase and using a $40 "Battery Tender Plus" for my 360...prior owner must have done the same thing as the pigtail was already in the car and the plastic from the factory sealing is still on the ferrari unit which sits next to the other tool kits.

Your last sentence says it all quite nicely ;)

That's why you don't own a 928. I owned a 310 hp model back in the day and discovered Porsche considered it their flagship model and thus flagshipped parts prices. I discovered a front fender, back around 1989, was $1200! 944 part cost a mere fraction. Price engineering at its fineset.

That's not a repair bill. That's just the price per pad. That doesn't include any labor. By comparison, similar year BMW M3 brake shoes, which look very similar, are around $30 (or less) for a set of all four shoes.

Remember, these are brake shoes, not brake pads. Brake pads are far more advanced (e.g., they stop you from speed, over and over again, etc.) Brake shoes just grab the hub when you're parked.

WHich makes me wonder, the new cars with electronic parking brakes, as opposed to e-brakes, curious to know how they work.

    Shoes are manufactured by NIFO.
May take them to local shop for relining. Any relining suggestions for Los Angeles area?

I need to do brake shoes on my 355

Looking in to aftermarket options. In 348 parts interchange thread found this
"Later type are the same as F355:
    170701 Apec SHU733 (Diameter 180x30mm)"

Found them on ebay from UK supplier. With shipping to US it would be around $90, compared to ~$220 for the OEM.
APEC Brake Shoes Part No SHU733 | eBay

Anybody tried them on F355? Also any other suggestions for US suppliers - NAPA? Carquest? Autozone?

    Thanks!

I've used the apecs on my 348 but the 25mm version and they work just fine. You get 4 shoes in a set and they cost around £25 in uk

Did a pictorial guide in link below

    Handbrake Overhaul

Btw 348 and 355 hand brakes are near identical

Rebuilding all four hand break shoes are like 100 $ in Sweden which I think is reasonable.

I looked up APEC application page, and comes out those brake pads are specifically for Ferrari:
    SHU 733 30mm
    F355 [94-99]
    456 [94-04]
    550 [96-02]
    Apec Braking

    SHU732 25mm
    308 [73-85]
    328 GTB [85-89]
    328 GTS [85-89]
    348 [89-94]
    365 Daytona [68-73]
    365 GT [66-67]
    365 GTB [1976]
    365 GTB 4 [1976]
    365 GTC [1976]
    400 [76-85]
    412 [85-89]
    GTO [83-87]
    Mondial [81-93]
    Testarossa [84-92]
    Apec Braking

I also tried searching for generic 180x30mm shoes and found this for $20 for all 4:
Your Parts Search Returned 1 Part(s)

However backing plate looks different from Apec/Ferrari, looks like so far Apec is the only real alternative to OEM.

    LOL cheeky!!!

BTW early 348s have the 25mm then later ones the 30mm which are in common with the 355.

Measure before ordering if your not sure!

Anyone know of an interchangeable handbrake shoe kit for a 1995 355?

Tried Apec but website doesn't list the price nor where to buy nor does their contact page work.

Was trying to get a quote on this:

    Apec Braking

No luck yet. Anyone have an alternative besides OEM or am I stuck paying 50$ a piece?

    Thank you for that Jeff,

I really wanted to know the price and their site makes no mention of it.

I tought Apec would be a good interchangeable but it's more expensive than oem.

    Sol on this one...

    No worries.

BTW Just so your comparing like with like the Apec kit/price is for 4 shoes ie. a whole axle set whereas the Ferrari ones are priced individually so its the price x 4.

I used the equivalent on my 348

    348 DIY "Restoration" - Page 45

BTW I wrote a small how to here:

Based on the ebay link you sent me I couldn't see anywhere in the description that it is 4 shoes. In the quantity it lists 1 and I don't see the word "kit" anywhere...am I missing something?

If the price is for all 4 then Hallelujah!!! Are you 100% sure?

BTW nice write-up on the overhaul but mine's going in the shop so I'm not doing it myself

Considering that they are just hand brake shoes, I'd just take them down to the brake shop and haver them relined. It's not like you are using them, eh?
