Thought i'd share a little post regarding replacing the ancient Chrysler / Jeep MiGig headunit in my FF.

It took me some time to research all the parts that I needed, but i got there in the end. If you fancy yourself as a bit of a DIY'er then this will be right up your street, it was an enjoyable job to do, no real snags to speak of and the end result of course is I have much updated tech in my FF.

I have the factory JBL upgraded HiFi. I have noticed the sound has improved greatly, it's certainly much crisper, however if you're an audiophile, you'll just want to change everything anyway! My primary reason for upgrading was really to get DAB and wireless Android Auto for maps. An added bonus being front and rear camera as that was never added to my FF from factory.

Once you've picked the headunit of your choice (I went with a Pioneer SPH-EVODAB64) you'll need the following products:

    * CONNECTS2 CT24CH07 CHRYSLER 200, 300C, ASPEN, GRAND VOYAGER DOUBLE DIN FASCIA PANEL

    * CONNECTS2 CAM-14 UNIVERSAL FLUSH MOUNTED REAR VIEW REVERSE CAMERA

    * CONNECTS2 CAM-15 UNIVERSAL SURFACE MOUNTED 1089 HD CCD SENSOR REVERSE CAMERA

    * UNICAN PLUS SPECIFICO CF0007UNUN31 CANBUS ISO ADAPTER WITH STEERING WHEEL CONTROL FERRARI FF, CALIFORNIA, CALIFORNIA T, 599.

    * CONNECTS2 STEERING WHEEL INTERFACE LEAD (PIONEER)

    * PIONEER AMPLIFIED DAB ANTENNA WINDOWS MOUNT

As you can see, the name Chrysler and Jeep pop up a few times. That was trick to finding everything I needed, was simply to think to was replacing a unit from that car, then I found the products. Adapter plates needed very minor modification and the steering wheel controls have been retained. I also didn't have front and rear camera's so I added those while I was at it.

I've posted a video on my YouTube channel here:

I really hope others will find this information useful if they're considering this as a DIY.

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to document all this.
I thought the rear camera was standard in the FF and it displays in the instrument binnacle. Do you lose the rear camera display in the binnacle when you swap out the head unit or can it be retained?

I have factory front and rear cameras in my FF and it would be a shame to lose them although I suspect the pioneer ones are of better quality and the head unit display is larger too! The front camera split angle view is especially useful when nosing out of an unsighted driveway onto a busy road.

Hi George, that looks like a lot of work! did you retain the stock camera functionality when you upgraded to the Kenwood and were there any gotchas during the installation?

    Thanks

It was a **** load of work. You gotta take apart everything. As you can see from the pictures. Make sure you have the right canbus for the steering wheel controls. And yes I have the front and back cameras and everything works perfect. It is so worth it. Just be careful when taking the lower dash apart. It is easy to break the retainer clips for screws. And we had to rebuild some
Of them. The PO had installed a radar detector and whom ever installed it. Did a terrible job putting it back together. So we fixed all the problems from before. I will post a pic of how she looks when I get back to the house

No camera's aren't standard, they should be, especially with the long bonnet / hood! If you do have standard camera's then you would have need another adapter for a separate cable that would go into the back of the factory head unit. Obviously I didn't have this but I did see the second input which didn't have anything plugged in. Again this was a factory Chrysler / Jeep connection so the would be an adaptor for that to convert to RVA connection.

I'm not that happy with the DAB antenna, it looks horrible. I think when winter rolls around again I will get myself a 'behind bumper' antenna and mount it in the rear bumper.

Nice Job George! It's amazing how much dashboard must be removed just to get to the headunit. Although having removed it now I think I could do it again in very little time.
Did you just change headunit and leave the speakers? Did you have the upgraded JBL HiFi? How are you finding the sound quality?

Great video (they all are) very helpful.

this was something I researched a lot before getting an FF. In the end I got a 2015 to attempt to avoid doing this.

I use a wireless dongle to achieve wireless CarPlay and so far it is great. Though I do yearn for a newer faster more responsive screen sometimes. So far I’ve made do.

it would be great to have higher resolution cameras. That may swing it for me. I have front and back on the car. If it was possible to replace them with higher resolution. That would probably push the change I think.

I've done this swap and mine are perfectly fine in the dash

would be nice if they were on a bigger screen but no biggie

if you have the carplay headunit, i recommend keeping it stock

but incase you do, there are some great high-def cameras you can install front/rear/sides. but if you're doing that I'd recommend a pro. If you have the black pillars for your side mirrors then you can easily hide cameras into them

I do - that's what I have been fighting with. Any particular reason?

I do have black pillars, that sounds very interesting. Have you seen that done?

I guess I have no good reason for keeping the stock carplay unit other than I like keeping it stock if possible but if you hate it then by all means get rid of it.

Yeah I saw it in a 458 recently and I was impressed, due to the lack of screen in the center they had it routed to a new rear view mirror that was always on (I have one of these in my mini but it only has one input)

Very clean install, when he put on the turn signal the camera split in half and showed the turn camera and the rear and when parking the reverse would switch back to forward cam for a few seconds after getting out of reverse

That is the same reason as myself really.

That does sound good - that is what I am weighing up. Altering the car and breaking its factory set up. Vs a really good install with as wide of a screen as possible and HD cameras.

Really if I break it down and not to take this off topic. I have wireless CarPlay and working camera's so I should probably leave it as it is

I view upgrades to my FF more in the realm of necessities vs wants

I would love a new exhaust, but I'm stunned by the current one
I couldn't use the terrible factory non-carplay unit safely imo, so I swapped it out

    to each their own

maybe when it crosses 100k miles or something I'll straight pipe it and gut it or I'll just keep enjoying my v12 hatchback haha

Its not a bad way of looking at it - I couldn't live with the non CarPlay unit. if I had found the perfect pre 2015 car that I just had to have. The head unit would have been out within the week.

I have a full Novitec so that area is covered thankfully!

    Hi guys

i just Changed my head unit in my FF 2012 for a Pioneer SPH-160DAB and i have the uppgraded HiFi sound system from JBL. Yesterday after the installation was done I was playing around with the equaliser and fader and realised that I have very very low sound from the rear speakers and subwoofer.

Does anybody know what the it could be?
I used the UNICAN specifico canbus and plug and play harness for California/FF.

Did you add an amp for the speakers as well. I have almost the exact same setup. But no issues from the rear speakers. In fact I blew the ones in the b pillar

Where ever you got your head unit from. They can get one. I would recommend going to a good stereo shop that has worked on Ferraris before
