Indeed a 3 dB increase corresponds to doubling the power, not the volume (I'm not a specialist, my "knowledge" of dB comes from optical power rather than from sound power).
It seems (by some browsing on the net) that increasing the volume requires more power, so that reducing the power by 3 dB does not half the volume (because one needs far more than doubling the power, or adding 3 dB, to actually double the volume) - so that's a good news ;)

The GPF mainly. Pista has no GPF and has less attenuation in the muffler so will be louder on the outside with a more defined engine note.

F8 apparently has electronic actuators which open the exhaust's valves incrementally based upon the ECU system readings. It all sits in a very fine balance so the emission systems work. As you may know Pista and 488's have vacuum controlled valves and don't have pressure/pulse sensors post cat like F8 and the other new GPF models... From what I was told the F8 cannot be played about with ....too many fail safes. It's a car you buy and accept it for how it is.

If a speaker system has a rated sensitivity of 90 db @1 m -1 watt, to raise the volume output by 3 dB to 93 dB requires double the amplifier power which in this case would be 2 watts. A further 3 dB increased to 96 dB would require 4 watts . And so on and on.

And the Pista doesn't have this? Then if so why not?

Drove the F8 today albeit it wasn't the longest drive because others were scheduled as well. Towbin will have their own designated car for test drives in January. In the mean time I have a 73 page guide or so to go through for options and customization. I'm going to work on that and go back and drive the car more properly in January. I included a quick start up video below also. I thought it sounded very good on start up and then there is a noticeable muteness to it after that. Not too bad but def. noticeable. Sounded like a Lion who wants to roar and is partially gagged as to make him quieter. I think I could live with it if there is no other option down the road. Confident there could be. I have a Huracan with the factory race exhaust and my GT3 RS has an Akrapovic exhaust on it. So I'm used to loud. Car has so much potential.

Small things: 7400 rpm or so soft rev limiter, tire gap and the Lexan rear window is a bit bouncy and distorted when you look out the rear. I think it's the type of thing you notice and think about once and then don't give it much thought after that. I really like Silver on this car as it shows the lines. Another advantage to that for me is I don't need exterior carbon. I like gloss black on the silver much better. I can put that savings elsewhere on the car. Steering wheel felt great and loved the seats. Seems like the shelf behind the seats is smaller than the 458/488. I need to go back and spend some more time for sure. This also gives me time to see what happens on the first deliveries as well. 10K refundable deposit they said. So no big deal there and that is all I have to say and know at this point. Car is drop dead gorgeous for sure.

Didn't get much of a chance to do a lot because of traffic. Was basically a controlled route I'm pretty sure. Punched it and tires broke loose of course. Car felt great. Just need some more seat time. Sales personnel did not go on the drive with you. It was someone who worked for Ferrari and knows the car very well and has race experience. I'll get a proper drive when the store gets their own car for this specific purpose. Was very rushed in my opinion as others have said as well. Lots of interest and the car is there for a short time and has to go somewhere else. All in all probably about ten minutes behind the wheel.

Looking back my first sentence starts out with: "Drove the F8 today albeit it wasn't the longest drive because others were scheduled as well."

The GPF is needed to comply with new European emissions rules that were not yet in force when the Pista was released - Ferrari explain that for the F8 they started with the idea of putting the Pista engine in the regular model, but had to rework it to adapt to these new rules.

In theory yes, measured mathematically. But empirically, doubling the noise takes a lot more than that. I love an engine's sound as much as the rest of us, but we have to agree that to some people it is a nuisance, especially when they are sleeping at night...

Had a chance yesterday to drive the F8 yesterday at a dealer test drive event. I drove my Pista earlier that day to get as close to a back-to-back comparison as I could short of a track event. First of all, the F8 is a very nice looking car relative to my recently sold 488 spider. The interior upgrades are nice, but not a primary reason to upgrade to this car IMO. The reason to upgrade from the 488GTB it replaces is the powertrain, and more specifically the engine. It is a substantial upgrade in power, shift smoothness/speed, and even ride quality.

As it compares to the Pista, it is a very different drive. The Pista is more raw, “feels” faster and more powerful, and shifts much more aggressively. The Pista’s steering feels more precise and to my liking, but the F8 is still a fantastic drive. I won’t comment on the exterior styling comparison as that is too subjective and personal.

As others have covered, the sound was the only disappointment. The F8 sounded far too muted for my taste. I wasn’t expecting it to sound like my Scud or even my Pista, but was hopeful that it would be at least as good as my 488 spider. From the outside, I didn’t think it was as good as the 488, but it was a modest improvement on the inside under hard acceleration, presumably due to the more powerful engine and the sound pipes.

Overall, the F8 is a fantastic car and will not disappoint those that decide to upgrade from the 488. If the exhaust sound/tone is paramount in your decision making, you probably want to drive it first.

I drove the F8 and an 812 last Friday. My FF is definitely louder then either car. Both cars were amazingly fast

If the sound is even better inside the car, I have no problem.

I just came back from my dealer. He gave me a sneak peek of the car. Didn’t get to drive it- that’s on Thursday but we sat inside and I turned on the car and Revved the engine.

    The car sounded....wait for it....GREAT!!!

Seriously- this concern over the sound is such a nothing burger. It sounded perfectly fine to me and I just don’t get all the angst.

Seems like a winner of a car- sound included.

On cold start I could hear it very clear from inside the dealership, pulling away slowly it was kind of quiet. I haven't heard what it sounds like when driving though but I am sure it is fine.
