It will be interesting to see if the market on this one still holds the saying firm that "something is only original once" A car, any car that has only done 10k miles should never need to be restored, regardless of age, it's sort of meaningless to apply such an important premium element to this example and one of the reasons simply tracking prices can distort perception of general value. This car should never be compared to one that has done similar miles and pretty much still untouched and how it left the factory. I have a feeling though that someone new to the market and clamouring to jump on the bandwagon may not look beyond the headlines, we shall see.
Agree with this. There’s a lot of hype about the investment angle and plenty of guys willing to overpay to get in the club, particularly in an auction setting where they can show off and “win”.
No question that a totally original car that has been properly stored & consistently maintained throughout it's life is top of the tree.
1992 Euro-spec #93308 is for sale in the second F40 online auction offering of 2023. I've been following these guy's early results (they are new and this is only their 5th listing) and they make it really unclear whether listings sell or not. They post the high bid in their results section but not whether it met reserve. According to their Instagram comments, they sold their LaFerrari but did not sell their MC12, but you wouldn't know either way from the results page. Obnoxious for people trying to track it! So the result of this F40 might be unclear.
Yes, not sure what to think of this auction house yet. They definitely bring interesting cars to market. Curious as to the legitimacy of it all. Sent from my SM-S908U using Tapatalk
Looks to originally be a cats (now running off Tubi LM pipes) with adjustable suspension specification.
And just like that we have the 3rd F40 online auction of the year announced, going through RM Sotheby's from 10 - 12th of May. https://rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/ap23/sotheby-s-sealed---ferrari-f40-allocated-new-to-alain-prost/lots/r0001-1990-ferrari-f40/1351294 Sold to (but flipped by) Alain Prost, #83249, 1990 Euro-spec. Sealed bid, thus the result won't be public.
I wonder if Alain Prost ever drove it? I have had good luck selling Supercars belonging to F1 drivers, Lauda, Rosberg et al. Meanwhile the Frankel article in the April 1997 Motor Sport magazine is excellent. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Bid to $2,930,000 USD with no buyer's premium. If it met reserve, and if the money is real, this is a world-record price for a Euro-spec road F40 at public auction.
Motor Sport is generous with their back catalog, and that story is readable on their website: https://www.motorsportmagazine.com/archive/article/april-1997/60/the-good-the-mad-the-ugly/ This also provides a look into the widespread distaste for the F50's styling at the time. It's the "ugly" in the article's title. Jeremy Clarkson used the same word. Meanwhile, at the time of this article, 6-year-old me had a poster of the F50 on his closet door. 8 or 9-year-old me bought this 1999 Hot Wheels car new in period. 32-year-old me writes this post with this car on his desk at all times. Looking at F50 values today, I am glad the world eventually caught up to my prescient, boyhood taste . I don't think this purple was a factory color on the real thing, though...
Thank you, since you posted it here seeking interest, what's the VIN number, can we see more images, and who's selling this F40?
