So you have ridden a 1098R? I too have ridden Ducati's from the late 80's 750SS to present, and a couple of bevelheads, and as much as I love my 900 Superlight as one of the most visceral rides out there, the 1098R makes HUGE power and torque, freight trains out of corners, the front end is as good as any Ducati, and I find the hair standing up on the back of my neck when I relax for a second and take it all in. The power comes on very evenly and strong, so you don't get a huge hit like older bikes gave because they did not have the technology available to tune over a wide RPM like now.

As for Japanese bikes, I owned a 92' Kawasaki ZX-7R. A heavy bike with only 104 peak HP, but with flatslides and a Muzzy exhaust, making horsepower the old way with big valve overlaps and a loping idle, a close ratio racing gearbox (the 7R at this time was the homologation model) and the long wheelbase of the early 90's, that machine railed for it's day and was really good in open sweaper country. I sold that machine and I still regret it.

For the combination of Japanese and Italian, there was Bimota. Now you can claim MV for the Ferrari equivalent, but I would contend that in the 80's and 90's, it was clearly Bimota. Still have a 92' YB8, which couples the beauty of the Italian hand built design (and they were hand built) with the FZR1000 motor, albeit massaged a little bit with the airbox removed and intake pods installed. That bike really feels fast, but it isn't much faster than a modern 600, and too heavy to hoist around in the twisties all day keeping up with one, as your shoulders will ache my noon. The bodywork is a pain in the ass to remove as it is one piece for the upper, side and lowers! It cost like a Ferrari too in it's day: List for the YB8 in 92' was $28,000. The welding of the twin spar aluminum frame and swingarm are a thing of beauty, and it uses hage chunks of billet aluminum that were milled into these incredible light, angular connections for frame to smingarm and headstock/triples. You can strip the bodywork off it and ride it naked and it is just as beautiful, if not more so, because it is so clean. BTW, Mr. Tamburini is the TA in BIMOTA.

Oh yeah.....when you go to adjust the valves, get ready. You have to lower the engine out of the frame mounts to get the valve covers off......

Here's a pic of the Bimota:

I love the Italian bikes. I have owned a few Ducatis in my time, mostly mid 90s Supersports - wonderful machines. My current bikes are a 2005 Benelli Tornado Tre and a 1965 Ducati Monza 250.

The Benelli is a hell of a machine. The radiator is under the seat with twin exhaust outlets above the license plate with two fans for stop and go driving. One of the nicest handling machines out there with a ton of power. I can sympathize with the Bimota maintenance regimen, they are all alike in this regard.

The 250 wouldn't seem like much fun with the Benelli around, but it makes every parking lot a go cart track - hilarious!

Love Ducati's Sportclassic models but wish they could have designed the seat to conform with the rest of the bike.

Great looking Monza 250...I'd love to get a 4-stroke single Ducati. Already have a 2-stroke single that I'm going to restore soon.

Thanks Ivo, I hope the inch of dust covering the old warrior isn't too obvious!

I think ducati's are quite similar to ferrari in the regards of racing heritage, performance, apperance, and character. With that said, they are no where near exclusive as a ferrari and probably more reliable to boot :)

The japanese models are all the same with different colors, lots of power but no character. Coming from a Suzuki Hayabusa, my next bike will be a Ducati Monster S2R probably.

And I thought I had a nice collection.....

I can give you a run for your money on bikes but your cars pretty much leave me in the dust.
