I was at a local Ferrari dealer and it seems they all have Lavazzza Point Espresso Machines:

They are fantastically designed, in-line with Italian style (I have two 16-yo Moka pots that have the same Steel/Gold accent look from Italy). I'm somewhat considering buying a Lavazza espresso machine, but I thought I'd ask better experts on good espresso. As I said, I drink brew with a Moka pot, which isn't quite espresso.

Would you say this Lavazza system makes good espresso (I'm a bit worried about the quality of the cartridges, with the whole K-Cup crave leaving a bitter taste in my mouth)?

    Thank you very much!

I guess it all depends upon what you want. If you would prefer good espresso/cappuccino without all of the work or hassle then I would think that the Lavazza or Nespresso type machines are exactly what you are looking for in a home machine. They produce good, consistant espresso/cappuccino with little to no effort or expertise required. Personally, much like making a good cocktail, I see the ritual of crafting the drink as part of the attraction and enjoyment of the drink. I use a La Pavoni Europiccola 8, which is a lever operated machine. Much like driving an old car it can be finicky, requires a "touch" and has a bit of a learning curve. That said once you figure it the result is pure magic on par with what I had in many a bar in Italy. They run about $800 for the Europiccola 8 and $1000 for the Europiccola 16 which has a pressure gauge and a larger boiler.

I think both the machine and coffee are garbage personally.

Whats your budget? What kind of machine do you want? What kind of drinks do you make and how often?

I have one at Ricambi, and respectfully disagree. A lot depends on the water you use, and the pod you chose. Is it comprable to something you might get freshly ground and hand tamped? No. Is the pressure the same? No.

But it is good at its designed function -- point of use espresso with a minimum of hassle.

For a capsule/pod based superautomatic its good and up with nespresso. Superautomatics and capsule/pod based suck IMO and I wouldn't drink them. I'm a bit of a snob though when it comes to espresso and only think a GS3 or synesso hydra are acceptable at home :)

I am not a big fan of pods as you must buy from the company.

If you want easy then yes get a pod, however, I have two super automatics; one at work and one at home.

    I prefer Capresso. I have a Z-6 and an older E-8.

Both of these use "real" whole bean coffee and have a shoot for ground coffee. The E-8 has one boiler so it takes about 30 seconds for steam to be ready.

The Z-6 on the other hand has two boilers: one for coffee and one for steam. Also no moving the cup. The machine does coffee and milk in the same location. This machine cannot be beat. I have owned this one for 5 years and the E-8 for 7 years both without a single malfunction or issue!

Looks like the Z-7 replaced the 6

and yes they are jura / capresso machines

I'm looking for something that has about the same preparation time as a Moka pot, and up to around $300. I'm planning on just making shots of espresso to mix with frothed milk as a Latte, or if I'm in a hurry, just as a shot of espresso. I'd probably make one cup a day, sometimes two.
