I have been investigating the current oil recommendation from Ferrari. Has anyone seen this oil available anywhere other than (presumably) the Ferrari dealer?

Here is the PDS for the Pennzoil Platinum Racing 5w-40 (2018):
    0d2a7349-5baf-4a56-8deb-395ec19c699d.pdf (shell-livedocs.com)

Here is the PDS for the previously Ferrari approved Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5w-40 (2014):
Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W-40 Technical Datasheet (sclubricants.com)

Here is the PDS for the current (unapproved) Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5w-40 (2020):
    53f3f71c-3b48-4343-8221-04ca6b02d1a3.pdf (shell-livedocs.com)

So the Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5w-40 never changed in formulation. It simply lost the Ferrari (and BMW LL-01) approvals. The newer, Ferrari approved Platinum Racing 5w-40 does have slightly different specifications, but unsure what it all means...I'm not an oil expert.

My dealer says that the Pennzoil isn't available. They use a German synthetic 5W-40.

Ferrari manuals use the phrase: Ferrari Recommended Oils

No oil brand is required or by law they must provide it free of charge - it's the law.

But if the oil does not meet the required specifications it will void the warranty and if Ferrari specifically call out oils as no approved then best to check the specifications. Many of the governments, US and EU are banning some of the additives in the oil for street cars due to either emissions or the affects they have on catalytic converters. "Racing" oil do not fall under that category so there may be an additive that Ferrari wants to remain in the oil. I notice the API move from SN to SP in the Euro platinum but generally going up an API grade has always been acceptable.

I have been through that with them in legal cases. They try try and bully you but the actual fact is they need to prove the oil used caused the failure experienced.

Years ago I bought a new (to my order) Maranello 575. Second gear was almost impossible to engage when first driving. I complained. I had a call from FNA and they said they would put in a new tranny for me. I refused. I told them I tried Redline gear oil and it was almost perfect. They did not say the warrantee was invalid nor there were any objections to it. Actually I became good friends with the tech people there since that time. That itself is a long and good story. They have actually asked to copy my oil chapters and send them to Italy - among other things I have done to Ferrari cars. They are not looking for ways to hurt you.

It's all marketing. The "OE" label is worth huge money. Your car is.not going ro explode because you used a Mobil One 5w40 or a Castrol 5w40. It's all nonsense.

And that nonsense is swallowed up by the foolish consumer who doesn't know any better.

It's all about the bucks..that's it. No doubt there are good oils out there that stand above the rest. These oils are usually not OE spec because the manufacturer didn't wanna pay the premium price. Penzoil..in a Ferrari..yea..no..

The only oil listed in the 812 manual is Shell and it is not one of my favorites. By the way, "racing" oils generally have a lot of Zinc - bad for the CATs. And generally little or no detergents - OK for the weekend but not for everyday use.

All manufactured endorsed, so-called "approved" oil are ONLY a marketing gimmick and nothing else.

Any well known brand, synthetic oil in the correct viscosity, and regular oil changes is far more important than a "brand" approved by a marketing team.

I don't know about Ferrari, as they do not publish what specs are in their approvals, but this is not true for BMW, VW, Mercedes, Porsche and many other manufacturers. Their approval codes have very specific requirements that must be met for various properties, to include high temperature, high shear (HTHS), deposit limits, Noack, emission protection (regardless that oil is full SAPS) and oxidation (especially BMW). BMW now has like 6 different oil approval ratings depending on which engine you have.

...And yet any name brand oil will work just as well, approval of XYZ manufacturer/engine or not. One percent more or less this or that additive makes no difference.

They can only "approve" what exists, any good synthetic brand will fulfill or even exceed the requirements of any manufacturer.

Another point to consider is that most of the viscosity "recommendations" are mostly based on emissions, and not necessarily on engine longevity.

I have owned many Mercedes AMG models (with the twin-turbo 5.5 M157 engine) where the recommended oil was known to be far too thin and the change intervals and cause disastrous consequences.
