    Hi All,

I have this recurring popping noise from my 2016 488. See video below. Dealership checked suspension bolts, control arm, and torqued wheel lug nuts. Any one have other ideas on what might cause this?

    Thanks!

Axle splines shifting in he hub. disassemble clean and reinstall with new nuts and green Loctite bearing retaining compound on the splines, common issue we have seen many times.

Really? I have never seen such a thing on any car! How did you discover this and what is the cause? Poor tolerances in the splines? I must remember this one..

Actually this one sounds worst then most but we have seen it on the 456-812 and 430 to current. Some models seem to be worst then others. just enough of a tolerance issue to pop between reverse and forward. You will find a small amount of rust dust when you pull them apart make sure it is cleaned out haven't had it return once it is serviced..

Thanks for the advice! My technician just did what you recommended but with the red loctite, and that didn’t help at all. Will the green loctite make a bigger difference? or will this require a replacement of the hub entirely? Note the car has only 8000 miles and I drove it very softly and always garaged.

Going strictly off of a video is always tough. Red Loctite is not designed to take up clearances like the shaft retaining compound but it should have worked for a bit.
Other items to look at are the torque of the axle bolts themselves, someone already mentioned the brake pads but this noise sounded more significant and it occurred on acceleration not on application of the brakes. Appears closer to suspension travel then perhaps the application of torque. Perhaps remove the lower shock bolts, ensure the spacer insert is properly in the lower arm and then reassemble the bolt with plenty of molly lube when there spacer fits into the arm and the bolt contacts the lower arm and passes through the arm and the shock. Bolt is the lower pivot and while I haven't seen that bolt make noise on the 488 it was really common on the 360/430 to the point Ferrari updated the bolt with a coating. The coating really didn't sort it out for long and we went back to molly grease. See attached picture for lubrication points. Otherwise some electronic chassis ears may help pinpoint. tough ones like this separate the men from the boys when it comes to diagnosis and fixing odd issues. Image Unavailable, Please Login

It is a loud noise.. But it is definitely rotational. I wonder if it is not a bad c.v joint

No popping noise when turning the steering wheel, only forward or backward motion triggers this sound.

Just followed exactly what this post says, cleaned the spline both on the shaft and in the hub, green loctite, and the noise persists. We now believe it’s a bad hub assembly. Just bought one and trying again in a couple weeks…

    Anyone have any other ideas?

I'd second something in the drive shaft or CV joint.

The noise on my 599 was not a " Popping " but a " Click, Click noise ", mainly when reversing but then after reversing and then going forward.
Technician at Ferrari said its a common problem on Ferraris, the drive shaft locking nut comes loose over time just enough to cause slack in the drive system, so you get a click, click on take up.
They replaced with new nuts and Loctite thread locker, once fitted you have to wait at least 24 hrs before driving to allow the Loctite to set.
Has been fine for over a year, but now just this week it i heard a click, click again on the OS rear, aaggh!

Just ordered an axle shaft… will report back on the results.

So far the following have been applied:

    1. Clean and loctite the rear right splines and axle hub
    2. retorqued and lubed all bolts
    3. Replaced the entire rear right axle hub
    4. Replace axle shaft (tbd)

loosen the bolts and retighten, a little bit of repositioning was done and there were no sign of wear/chip/damage. That stopped the popping completely.
