I’m no Mac fanboy, prefer Ferrari’s but this is simply untrue. I cannot comment on Australian 720S sales.
Sales are very strong in Aus and in the RoW. No different than Ferrari with the exception that there are fewer 720s than 488s built, sold and available. 488s are mass produced in comparison.
On Canadian Auto Trader, there are 4 -720S listed. Price at $300K US ( 2000mi), 320K US, 322KUS, 325K US are brand new.
Here my comparison 488/720 S . ( I wrote reply in wrong thread, sorry) Image Unavailable, Please Login
In addition: I have payed in Germany 248 k including VAT , with some extras 260 k. In know also two 488 owners, they are not so happy with the body roll in bends, 720 S is as comfortable as 488, but no significant body roll . This is a weak point of 488, track times on similiar level like 720 S, but driving both cars on track you have to fight more with 488 because of more body roll and more weight. My C7 Z06 has less body roll. Steering at 488 is very good, not worse than 720 S steering. Brakes also on same level.
Revving comparison 488 vs FGT vs 720S. IMO none really sound any better or worse than the others. They all sound like turbos and nothing amazing.
Standing revs prove nothing, of course. But God help us if this is the is what to expect going forward. I suspect it is given the diversity of OEMs represented.
Thanks for the comparison. I much prefer this kind of critique, logical and based on actually owning both cars. Thanks again. One question, I know what I would mean by the word ‘emotional’ but could you describe a little more what you mean exactly by emotional. Is it playfulness, and do you put this down to the lack of a rear e-diff on the 720? Or is it about the brand, a mixture of both or something else entirely?
Turbos don't sound "good." It is what it is and they never will. This is what to expect going forward in the short-term, but long-term exhaust sounds will disappear entirely when everything is an EV. More than likely exhaust notes will ultimately be digital and pumped into the car via the speakers.
With „488 more emotional“ than 720 S , I mean in first line sound design and throttle response of engine. Due to the very short gear ratio, 3. gear ends at 135 kph compared to 168 kph at 720 S, 488 engine is very lively and has a lot of temper, short gear ratio helps 488. And resonance membranes in engine bay helps to imitata n.a. suction noise . Exhaust flaps open earlier at 488, at 720 S sound ist good over 4000 rpm, but 720 S has two 600 cell cats per bank and 488 only one 400 cell cat per bank, so with open exhaust flaps 488 is a little bit louder from outside. Exchancing cats from 720 S with 200 cell sport cats brings increase of 2dB exhaust noise. But clear is, you cannot reach n.a. sound like 430/458 as with increasing revs turbo exhaust is increasing and sound level decreasing because of higher exhaust gas pressure. Sound in idle is at both cars nearly the same. After driving 720S or 488 a couple of days, I am happy to drive my C7 Z06 sound at engine start is really sound emotion. I guess that the coming turbocharged C8 Corvette will not sound as good as C7. Mercedes GT sounds not bad, but artificial, GT R AMG very loud, but loud is not always good or better
Thanks for your posts! A read all of them, especially about performance dates of 488, and its power tuning. Do you change cats on 488, or make software upgrade? How much ps and 100-200 before and after?
It's the 570S LT, whatever it will be called. The exhausts are on top deck kinda like the 918. You can see the full spy shots on the McLaren forum. Can't post the pictures here. http://www.mclarenlife.com/forums/mclaren-570s/74865-600lt-7.html
Those top mounted exhausts are greatttt! This thing will be incredible. if they keep pricing in the mid 200's nothing will touch it for the price. It may even take the 720 on a track if they give it enough tire.
Was passing by Mclaren London last night and they were showing something in private one could barely see.
Here my first measurement results of 720 S with odometer 1150 km. Car is really fast, measured at 15 degrees C , tank 3/4 full, without co – driver. Tyre ( air temperature ) 35 deggrees C. Measured for first trial in sport mode and LC, ESC on, results very good. Then 15 minutes later I measured 488 GTB, same start point at test road, results disappointing since last service, 1.6 s slower than 720 S at 100–200 kph. max 615 hp. Normally my 488 GTB runs 5.6 s in LC mode. I am not a totally convinced McLaren friend, but cars have power, mostly more than qouted.
That acceleration for the 720S on a public road is unreal for a RWD car. Knock .3 of a second for each data point on a prepped surface.
My measurements confirm test results of international auto press, my 720 S is running very good. Auto Motor Sport results the same, see test sheet. Best results in Autozeitung 0–100 kph 2.6 s und 0–200 kph 7.1 s, also 4.5 s then 100–200 kph. ( without co – driver). Image Unavailable, Please Login
On a prepped runway my friend did 2.6/7.2/11.3/18.9 seconds to 100/200/250/300 kph respectively in his 720S. 0-60 mph in 2.53 seconds and 0-130 mph in 7.81 seconds. Quarter mile 9.86 seconds at 146.5 mph and half mile in 15.44 seconds at 174.9 mph according to his testing equipment. I got this info from him this morning. He also told me the 720S is objectively the best car he's ever owned (although not his favorite), and he's owned a 918. He said from a roll the car will take a 918 in a straight line and it's amazingly light and tossable in comparison. Makes sense why it's demolishing track records.
