Can anyone pls comment on the relative reliability of the 458 vs. Bentley Continental GT (CGT). Also running costs/maintenance. Which would serve better as an often driven car (not necessarily a daily driver but several times a week). I've heard that these CGT's being essentially German, are built like tanks and missile proof, any truth to this? Can same be said of the 458? Thanks you Sart
Honestly - it's not really possible to compare those cars. They are totally different. The Bentley is big, quiet, heavy and comfortable - it's a GT... The 458 is a supercar and none of the above...
The Bentley is a great car and like Bigblock737 said, totally different. Not only that but also feel. I drove a Continental at 270km/h and I could hear the guy chew gun next to me. I heard the Bentley is very reliable. But still very expensive. My feelings are, if you have to ask a question like this, you already answered it, the Bentley.
+1 very true Basically hard to compare 458 and Bentley GTC, both serve being well driven cars in their different characteristic. GTC is very very nice car to be driven for long journey regardless the road condition and weather. You can't go wrong with both but depend on your need actually.
It depends what generation cgt. The early ones have a terrible reliability. the newer ones, especially the new gen have been proven more reliable and higher quality. The first gen cgt have a pretty cheap interior and does not age well
The 458 is very reliable. Put ~ 9,300 miles on my 12 coupe in 2 years with no issues, no maintenance (7 year free maintenance) and no added costs other than gas.
My 2010 458 has been perfect. MY 360 and 430 had scary upkeep costs not so the 458 I have owned 4 British cars and frankly had trouble with all of them. These cars were all new. My Aston Martin was fairly good. The Evora Turbo S stopped running the third week of ownership. The dealer would not honor the warranty on a new car that a bought from them. The result is I stay away from British cars and buy German, Italian or American. I have had no trouble with these other cars. I did have a little trouble from a Dodge but the dealer took care of everything and have owned two new cars since then with no problems. I just bought a new Viper which I love. Best Lee
I own a '12 458 Spider, an '11 California and a '15 CGT Speed. The CGT is vastly more practical and reliable. It is marginally more comfortable than the Cali, much more than the 458, but you'd expect that. Costs of ownership are about equal, because of the disparity in fuel economy, but holding that out of the equation, the Bentley is cheaper to operate. AWD has taken me well through the winter, and the rims are not as pothole-prone as the Ferraris. The Cali has had ALL the problems you'd see detailed on that thread. So far, the Bentley has had a few electrical hiccups, but otherwise is smooth sailing. The 458 is new to me as of December, and has been stored, so not enough time to really evaluate.
Hi Spyker, When you say the GTC is cheaper to operate, can you elaborate? I imagine this is in comparison to your Cali as you've only recently acquired the 458 Spyder. Separately, and this is a matter of taste and culture, If you were a business man looking for an image car to roll out a 2-3 times a week (dinner with business associates or a round of golf), which would you consider more appropriate? I use the wife's Land Rover LR4 for basic daily runs. I work in Private Equity (Finance) and as much as I've been lusting after the 458, I'm a bit dubious as to how it might be perceived by potential LP's (investors) and or business associates. On the one hand, it checks the image box, but it also might seem a bit sophomorical in more conservative quarters. The CGT on the other hand seems to me the polar opposite, a bit dowdy and old manish". Would love to indulge your thoughts. Sart
I have owned 3 Ferrari's (360,430, 458) and two Continental GT's (2007 Diamond Edition and presently a 2012). I can compare the two and if I were to simply speak of maintenance (both cars cost close to the same presuming nothing major happens). As far as daily or frequent drives, the GT is the more comfortable, the 458 the more fun. The GT is very fast (I choose the 12 cylinder over the V8) and for me gives me the feeling of "wealth" while the Ferrari is "visceral" . As other have will say, it is difficult to compare the two cars. Actually owning both allows for my personal "mood swings". Best
Hi Sartoria, I would want to roll-up in the Bentley. It expresses elegance, solidity and steadiness whereas the Ferrari expresses adventure and risk-taking, which is not the right image for private equity. In terms of ownership cost, the service is now included on Ferraris, but not on my '11. Tires go quickly. Down time is a cost, and it had plenty of that. In terms of feel, the Speed versions of Bentleys cannot be compared to standard CGTs. The growl of the W12 is intoxicating, as is the rush of torque. They are pigs in the handling department, but the Speed is only a tick or two behind the Cali. It is not sharp. It is hard to place and see the edges of the car.
Around here nobody drives Bentleys except geezers (like me). Not even seen anyone under 60 ride in one as a passenger. Young people driving Bentleys may look like someone trying too hard to impress.
I think most people who can drop $300k on a car are probably over 60. Don't mistake correlation for causation.
the "elephant in the room" here is depreciation. i have a '13 458 spider (original owner) and i am about to purchase a used 2014 GTC V8-S. i have spent quite a bit of time assessing depreciation of these vehicles, as i believe this is the biggest factor in determining the true cost of owning a car. an important question: are the vehicles in question being purchased new or used? if used, how old and how many miles are on the odometer? the bentley has the faster depreciation, perhaps $60K as soon as it is driven off the lot. a new 458 spider should lose $40-60K in 2 years. in terms of performance, the bentley is a heavy beast of a car, partially compensated by a very powerful engine with lots of torque. the B-car is not a sports car, but a luxury touring vehicle, imho. the 458 F-car is light and nimble, a true sports car. really, the two vehicles are at opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of handling and performance.
Thank you Spyker and all. Honestly, I've been eyeing the 458 for a year now and almost about to pull the trigger. My heart says 458 and my head (for all the reasons identified i.e. reliability, durability, ease of use, my industry sector - private equity, etc) says GTC. And like you Spyker, I'm a 44yr old Geezer but I easily pass for 32 due to years spent in the gym and good genetics. So i'm a bit mindful about seeming pretentious, or appearing like what the french call a "Parvenu" in a Bentley. For both cars, Im looking at CPO 2012/13. Someone commented on immediate depreciation, would a 2/3yr old Bentley have taken much of its depreciation vis-a-vis a 458? For those who've driven the CGT Speed vs. CGT V8, is the difference that notable? I'd also like to have more perspectives from any other forum member who holds a view on the subject, particularly on the subject of appropriateness for business image. Thank you all Sart
Live just a little, and get the 458. Go with your heart. The sound of the engine at redline, is enough to make you forget about sex..for a day or so.
You will be a real Geezer soon enough, buy what you want. What other people think isn't really that important.
