I'm new to the forum, and I've really enjoyed reading all the wonderful posts from all you lucky 458 owners. I know this is a Ferrari forum, and my question is most likely to get some very biased response. I would be very grateful to get some non-biased, sincere response tho. I've been shopping around for a very special car that would keep me very satisfied for a very long time. I need something that would give me the most satisfaction of owning, in all aspects (design, Performance, reliability, feel-good factor etc). I know either of these 2 cars is wonderful, and most definitely going to be very satisfying . So I've been considering either the incredible, and magnificent 458, or the all new Lamborghini Aventador. It has been such a nightmare for me to decide. My questions is, WHICH WOULD YOU PICK OVER THE OTHER, AND WHY?? I would really really appreciate to read all your contributions.
Firstly thats a dilemma that everyone would wish they had lol. Secondly I do not quite think it is fair to compare the 458 to the aventador. If you want to compare the 458 to a lamborghini it should essentially be the upcoming Gallardo replacement which is expected to have first orders shipped in mid to end of 2013 supposedly named the Cabrera. You can put letters of intent down for that car as I have, I am guessing deposit taking will start in Q1 2012. Price on a very nicely specced 458 is £220-230k. Price for a nicely specced Aventador is £280-300k. So price wise there is quite a difference. 458 is a 4.5L V8 compared to the lambo which is 6l V12. Thats already a huge difference. Different cars to drive then obviously, especially with the audi/lambo 4 wheel drive system in place. I currently have an audi R8 and I feel the lambo interiors are definitely getting better due to Audi input, but it feels too much like an Audi interior now - maybe thats just me. Aventador phenomenal car to drive. Daily driver? - yeh quite possibly, but gotta be sure u have 2 parking spaces wherever u take it. Im not quite sure what you wanted to hear because these cars are so different. Maybe wait for Ferrari to announce 599 replacement? But if you were to place an order today and it was between Aventador and 458 for you and you say you wanted to keep it ages - i would probably say Aventador - its newer than the 458 and lambo are less likely to change the flagship sooner than the usual 9-10 years as on their previous cycles. the 458 will essentially change in 5 years to a newer model, however knowing all this i have gone for the 458 and will also get the 458 replacement whilst keeping the 458 just because I feel Ferrari, for me, stirs my soul more than the lambo (although I am on the Cabrera list as well- but if it feels too similar to the R8 i will not take it). Yes I am biased towards Ferrari, but I think I have given you an unbiased opinion? Sunny Ps another consideration - Aventador you will most likely be able to get in a year. 458 most dealers you are probably looking at longer delivery times. I ordered a month ago and looking at Jan 13 delivery/pick up from maranello on the 458.
I would pick the 458 over the aventador but would chose the aventador roadster when it comes out over a 458 spider mainly because i think it will look amazing.
458. Get all the options you want til it's perfect. After that, you can upgrade the exhaust, and have Underground Racing hook you up with a TT; and still have money left over. ;-D
I chose the 458 over the Aventador --- but I really like the Aventador. I think it's the most exicting product to come from Lambo since the Countach. I think they have done a terrific job in styling and technology. I'm not too crazy about the interior but that's not a major issue. The reason I chose the 458 is that 1) it's a Ferrari 2) It's cheaper and 3) it's available now. Anyone getting either car will get something fantastic.
totally agree with Bdelp. I haven't liked a Lambo in many years but the Aventador is a beauty. I still prefer the 458...oddly enough...in black as mine is...it still flies somewhat under the radar...which I like. I get more looks and thumbs up for my 911 Turbo than the 458...such an odd thing but it's true.
Well, I driven neither so it's just a guess, but going on the F430 against the Murciélago (both of which I've done a lot of miles in) I'd say the 458 is going to be closer to a daily. Just the sheer size of the Lambo can make it a pain in the arse on many journeys (especially that wider at the back than the front thing - don't know if that's still the case). And that's before you get onto stuff like visibility and what you can carry with you (a toothbrush in the Lambo, full grooming kit in the F-car!). I'm guessing there are many journeys you'd do in the 458 that you might take the Merc for if you only had the Aventador as your fun car. The flip side, though, is that those lesser occasions are going to be that much more of an event.
Visibility was fine. Dash was great and GPS/Stereo was a LOT better than 458's. Mirrors gave you a good view of rear so I don't see that as an issue. Car was very easy to drive my 22 year old Daughter had no problem driving it. Very well made and serviceable. Front lift worked well. AC was great. Car ran cool in stop and go. When you stand on it and shift the shift is totally brutal. I think it would make a great daily and if I was sick of my 8C would buy one. (I don't need another Sunday Driver).
No doubt the game has moved on for Lamorghini but is your closing comment, "I don't need another Sunday Driver", what I'm getting at...
I don't consider the Aventador a Sunday driver at all. If I bought one I'd use it as a daily BUT I already have a daily I like and don't want another car that I wouldn't have time to drive as I already have 11+ Sunday Drivers.
Not sure if my opinion counts since I was originally planning on trading my 458 for an Aventador, but I think I'm going to just have both. I've driven the 458 quite a bit for about a year, and have had maybe an hour of seat time in the Aventador. Both are equally well equipped to be daily drivers. Aventador is a little lower so you'll be forced to use the front lifter in situations where in the 458 it would be optional. Ride comfort in the Aventador is noticeably better than the 458, even when the 458 is in bumpy ride mode w/magnaride, not sure why that is to be honest. 458 lets you play with the tail a lot more which is great when you want to, horrible when you don't. In the Aventador, if you're switching lanes into a fast lane from a stop, you can just stomp your foot down and it rockets out with no fuss. I'm scared to do the same thing in the 458 since the traction control kicks in and the car stutters a bunch as the wheel try to get some traction. The throttle sensitivity of the 458 and the steering sensitivity is just a bit too high in my opinion for a daily driver (I'm nearing 20k miles so clearly it's not a dealbreaker) but I always feel like I have to be a bit more alert than I wish I needed to be when driving it. The Aventador probably would make an overall better daily driver than the 458 for those reasons. It just feels more safe to drive, and more comfortable to drive in traffic and over longer distances. My current plan is for the Aventador to take over the 458 as my daily driver, and for the 458 to be a weekend car. I'm going to agree with the GPS/stereo being better, although the positioning of the GPS sometimes makes it hard to read in the bright sunlight.
Could you please give me your perspective on the quality/interior design of the Aventador in comparison to that of the 458, haven driving both. And which had a better overall impressive ext/intr design and quality finish. Thanks again for your contribution

I am lucky and I own both a 2010 458 and a 2010 Galardo 560-4. As one post said both are wonderful cars. This is my third ferrari and my second Lambo plus a bunch of other cars I currently own. The 560-4 has improved over past models and they handle better with less of the 4 wheel drive stifness. The 458 in my view is a lesser ferrari then my 360 Modena or F430 were in there day. So the cars have come closer together then in past model years. The ferrari 458 has a very modern 7 gear dual clutch transmission. This mean it shifts very quickly and smooth. It is a technical marvel. The Lambo has a 6 speed paddle shifter and while smooth is not as nice as the Ferrari. Once nice Lambo feature when the car is place in "sport" mode the car bumps the trottle as it shifts down. The Lambo you must place in neutral when you stop so the cluch does not burn out before its time . This is not needed with the 458. The ferrari transmission and clutch system is so good that I think the F car wiil out drag my 2009 ZR1 all thuo the ZR1 pulls much harder. Both the lambo and F car have about the same power i.e. 560 and 562. Both cars in race mode or sport mode have great engine exhust sounds. Each has a different sound but both are great. Both cars have been reliable all thou they are a little more expensive to maintain then a vette. These newer Lambos and F cars have a less expensive maintenace schedule then the cars of the past, i.e. no belt replacements or motor removal at a certain time period, etc. Both are now great cars. Gone are the days if the cars sat they would miss and you have to take it to the shop. The old cars were finicky the new ones are not. Regards Lee
Although I am not a fan of either, I would pick the Ferrari for one simple reason. It has been my experience that Lambos nose dive in value much faster than F cars. Really the only thing I dislike on the 458 is that is has too much crap on the steering wheel for my taste and considering we live in the US of A, has no cruise control. It should be an option at the very least as we have an overabundance of revenue generators out there.
great point that I'm also very concerned about. Which one of these 2 cars will depreciate much faster/much more ?? thanks.
Impossible to tell. It all depends on how many want them and how many they make. You can't use previous information as an absolute guide on the future on a new model. Yes, there's some history but history can also be changed.
Hard to say, my neighbor paid $300k to get a sub 1k mile used 2010 458 Italia shortly after it was released, put 10k miles on it, and trade in quote from the dealer is $230k after less than a year. That's a pretty quick nose dive if you ask me. If price is a problem, I'd stick to the 458, given that the spider is out now and a used one could be had today for ~$250k, but I assumed this comparison was being made because both cars are "within budget." I'd say the Aventador presently has a better chance at holding its value percentage wise considering the 458 is a 2 year old model that gets replaced every 5 years, while the LP700 is a 0 year old model that gets replaced every 10 years. Buying a 458 today means very rapidly living through the 2013 spider, the 2013 scuderia, the 2014 scuderia spider, and the 2015 replacement. As for the Aventador refresh 5 years down the line, that may fall at a faster clip.
