    hello,

i tried to find a thread on this and couldnt. i'm getting mixed messages on the ferrari 348 interior between the media and the owners. it appears to me that the upper portion of the door pannels look like plastic, but the rest appears to be leather. f-chat owners complain about the plastic interior. here's car and driver magazines road tests on the 348 had to say:

    1) december 1989 ferrari 348 road test. "as we've come to expect, every interior panel is covered in hansome leather" csaba csere.

    2) march 1993 ferrari 348 road test (92' model) "the interior is equally chic, with crisp smelling black leather covering most of the insides:seats, console, dashboard, door pannels and even the running board trim are cowskin-clad." don schroder

car and driver seem to be somewhat creditable source. so 348 owners, 89'-93' particularly, what is your 348 interior? full leather or a wash of vynil?
and why do two identical 1992 348's i've looked at have different antenna's (one with power located on buttress, the other fixed roof mounted)

    thanks in advance.

I don't think the dashboard covering is leather, or the top panels in the doors, or the covering on the panels behind the seats. These are manmade materials. The seats, console, and lower panels on the doors are leather. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm guessing that the manmade materials on the upper panels are less likely to fade and crack in the sunlight, so high quality manmade materials are used. And it's cheaper. The interior of the 348 can't begin to match the quality of Mercedes, for example.

I think you'll find that most of the complaints about the "plastic" interior of the 348 are directed at the dash vents and other black trim pieces, and the actual complaint isn't about the piece itself, but about the rubbery paint that Ferrari applied to them. This silly paint turns horribly gooey, and gets all over your hands when you touch it. The pieces themselves are generally OK once the paint is stripped off, although the ashtray surround is notoriously weak. And it must be said that some of the trim panels on the seats, seatbelt tracks, doors, etc. do not fit well and are not well secured. Inattention to detail.

The 348 was not originally equipped with a radio or an antenna from the factory, these were dealer installed. The wiring and speakers were present from the factory. The dealer (or other installer) could place the antenna in the fender or on the roof or stuck to the inside of the windscreen behind the mirror (like mine). Later 348's had the antenna imbedded inside the windshield glass.

The 348 interior is all leather (doors, seats, console, dash bottom, bumperstrip on luggage shelf). The only bits that are not are the dash top and the bit by the rear window. Period.......no debate.

I know Darron's is a later car, is yours a later car as well Dino....The guy was originally asking about the earlier cars....Mine is a 91'....Miltonian's is an early car as well....maybe this is another difference between earlier and later cars also.

Mine is the 32nd car of the production run(17th US car). My seats are faced in leather as they are factory carbon fiber sport seats. The entire door (except for the carpeted area down low) is leather.

My '94 is all leather on seats (even backs), entire door trim, and even around the brake handle. The only vinyl is the upper dash and the rear under the window.

Carefull what you apply armourall to. If you put it on leather it will look like plastic.

All leather. Doors, seats, in back of the seats where the top goes, bake handle, front of dash (not the top), back of seats, door sills. I can't believe Ferrari would put vinyl on the top of the doors.

Thanks for answering this mystery - I went searching on eBay to restore my Spider with a factory radio... no dice.
