I want to get back in the fold so I'm ready (right now) to buy a 308 GTB. Ideally: 1976-77 but might consider a later car, any color, well maintained with records, desirable upgrades (electrics, ignition, cooling, exhaust, wheels), average certifiable mileage. NO-NOS: rust, accidents, salvage/missing/questionable titles, turbos/superchargers, incomplete projects, irreversible mods. Condition trumps originality. Willing to pay current and fair price (Fchat, BAT, SCML, Clist) for the right car. If you have one you're considering selling or know someone who is, please send me a private message with the particulars and I will respond to all.

Are you interested in a somewhat project car? 1979 GTB red with tan leather (last year for carbs); runs and drives fine but a couple inop items; AC and window lifts. Driver seat and door panels need re do. Rust free Arizona car with a couple mods; no front bumper but has grille covering entire opening, Gotti wheels, Vitaloni Turbo mirrors. Recent belts and carbs rebuild. 46K actual miles. Located in central AZ. -Marc

I followed with some interest a BAT auction that ended today (4/22/24) of a 1976 308 blue vetroresina. The winning bid was $160,500, which I considered more than fair for a car that had been bid to $162,500--but not sold--at Bonham's last summer and that had IMHO some issues here and there. I realize that there's a premium for vetro cars over steel ones but what's the consensus on the margin or premium of one over the other. Any thoughts you care to share would be very instructive to me as my search for an early GTB continues.

Since you're talking about carb GTBs specifically, I would consider the hierarchy to be as follows, ranked from least to most desirable....or..."valuable".
North America "late" steel GTB 78-79
North America "early" steel GTB 76-77 (hotter cams and original non-cat)
Euro spec steel GTB (dry sump) 76-80 (later cars had distributor with electronic pickups instead of points, which I view as a benefit, but probably not a substantial value differentiator)
    North America fiberglass 1976
    Euro spec fiberglass 1976

Pricing between the flavors can vary significantly based on condition, colors, etc. so it's really hard to quantify.
In general...for a good condition "normal" color NA steel car, probably 65-85k
    Euro steel car 80-100k
    NA glass 130-150k
    Euro glass 150k+

Having previously owned a '76 steel NA car and currently a '79 euro car, I would advise you to consider condition over everything else. At this stage, mileage on the odometer should not be a considered as important. Very easy to see a "low mileage" car that needs a complete mechanical overhaul due to deferred maintenance.

Best of luck in your search. A well sorted and set-up carb GTB is an excellent car and offers a wonderful experience at the price point.

Agree 100% on years, prices and desirability factors. Ideally for me: 1976-77, red or yellow exterior, black interior, with as many upgrades (fuse box, exhaust, ignition, stainless valves, 15" wheels) as possible. Indifferent as to steel or vetroresina.
