Sorry if this is a re-post but it's quite entertaining..... Ferrari 308 GT4 on Wheeler Dealers Enjoy . Parts 1 6. Coincidently I just watched these episodes this morning...surprised though that there was no mention of belts being done though..
Just finished watching it all. Love the show and love that they grabbed a Ferrari 308 to work on... Thanks for posting. I enjoyed it immensely. MB
That was very cool. Best part was the narrator's reaction when he bought and drove the gt4 home. I remember that exact feeling...priceless. Thanks for putting us on to this.
Thanks for that, it was really interesting. That paint job was cheap!! I wish I could find someone to paint my car for that price... Dom
It's funny...I spent much of the episode talking to the screen: "Your exhaust headers are toast" "You can get the rear header out without moving the engine!!! I did and I have a US car w/o removable heat shields!" "Just remove the wheel and move the gas tank and alternator!" "Oh, either use a hole saw and weld from the inside, then weld the hole back...or simply call Superformance!" And about the paint -- remember that a)it's British pounds, so about $2750 US (I haven't seen the exchange rate in a while) and b) we have higher environmental impact fees here, so it tends to add some cost to paint/body...although for $2750 you can get a shop to paint a whole car as long as they don't have to do much serious body work (and you've already stripped the car of most of the parts they'd need to r/r or mask.)
I love Wheeler Dealers. Ed China is a great guy to watch working. I saw the GT4 in the intro some time ago. Lovely car and very cheap. I did love the welding to pul the panel back into shape. Great technique that is!
Best bit was how the front bumper, the rear light and fog light lens magically repaired themselves - brilliant!
I loved the bit when he was looking at the first Dino and asked the guy if it was a "Submarine" previously due to the rust issues! LOL. Bob.
I am surprised that a car in that shape did not need some major service and also have some electrical quirks or leaks that needed addressed to be referred as a restored car.
I found the show entertaining but amazingly irresponsible. No service history, no mechanical inspection prior to purchase, no discussion of maintenance costs... I have watched almost every episode of Wheeler Dealers. Unfortunately, in almost every episode, they focus on the cosmetics and do only those mechanical repairs necessary to help the car sell. Obviously, in the context of the show, this makes sense as it is about flipping cars. However, in this instance, I think the show gave the unfortunate impression that a Ferrari can be an inexpensive alternative to a family car. IMHO, there is no such thing as a cheap Ferrari...pay now or pay later.
Finally watched this last night. 1. His enthusiasm for buying the car was really cool to see. 2. The interior looked great! Hard to believe that it had been a rental. 3. The dent system was really neat but they never discussed the cost of such a tool. 4. I don't understand how they figure that they are making a profit on any of this - does Edd work for free? Couple of days of work for him and he then splits the "profit" with the other guy so he just made less than 600 quid for, probably, almost a week's worth of work. Doesn't make sense to me. All in all a pretty cool show and the 308GT4 looked awesome when finished but, as others have posted they glossed over a LOT. Lights that fixed themselves, tatty looking badges that were suddenly fixed, etc.
"The steering is nice and light" ??? What kind of a Dino was HE driving?? And what about that exhaust that they are fitting in the leader? Double central tube running UNDER the engine??? Good fun to watch though...
Can someone explain what he meant by using "steel hammers exploding in your face" when hitting steel? Is the effect that severe? Thanks and sorry for being somewhat naive, I just never heard of anything like that before. Is he referring to the steel possibly breaking off each piece(hammer) and flying around?
He does that for almost every car; last week he was hooting ecstatically while driving in a just-bought Saab 99 with a bum turbo (that miraculously healed itself when they replaced the shabby interior).
OK Big D, yes yes,, it's like Hollywood.... But, I remember buying my first,,,, a lowly 1985 Cabriolet Mondial, with a NORWOOD turbo. I drove it 250 miles home... I had a smile sooooooooooooo big.. LOL Edwardo
Love that show and particularly when they feature my car. Even showed a yellow one like mine at the beginning. Ed is really a gearhead... my king of guy, and Mike is a warm showman. But they are always enthuisiatic about the cars they work on. This is unlike those other meatheads at Top Gear (UK) where they are really only taken in with (love) themsleves. Yes, as mentioned in previuos posts/replies above, a lot of things were glossed over, but the show was entertaining, and radiated enthusiasm for the car of our passions. And I allways think is a bit of a joke that Ed's labour is free. Especially on a cars such as Ferraris which are very labour intensive. (Employment security for all the Luigis out there.) BTW Hans your comment about "light steering" is spot on. Mine is heavy with its big tires and a smaller steering wheel. But I noticed that their car had original Dino wheels and smaller tires. That would help some. Martin
I love this show, unfortunately I only can find it on YouTube! I think I've seen every episode out there but this 308 GT4 episode was very cool. The show hardly addresses mileage or service histories, but I think because Edd China is a master mechanic, they really don't need to worry about that as much knowing the tall man in their corner and can fix anything. I have seen Edd fix just about everything on a car! The man is amazing, wish he was around where I live. Mikey boy is a ball of laugh and wit. The two of them are very entertaining and I always learn something new from watching Edd. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJNKMjYrnkg[/ame]
It always amazes me what they don't bother with. Their MGB show had restored the wheels(Rostyle) and they put them back on with the rustiest lug nuts you'll ever see. Fun show though. I think they pick out things for Edd to fix so there's a learning element that's not too repetive. They seem to end up with decent "drivers" cars but hardly a "nut & bolt" renovation. Yes, poor old Edd does work "for free" but I imagine he's paid well enough as a star in TV land.
