    Hi guys,

I'm currently rebuilding a 2 Valve Ferrari 308 engine US Spec, from a previous thread I got a number of pointers so I appreciate this immensely. Through this thread I intend to post updates on my progress, ask for advice , and have fun whilst we're at it.

The intention is to remove all the emission parts and convert the engine to perform somewhat similar to a European one or better!

    I am based in Europe.

    Engineering

From what I've seen this is what I think will need tackling:
    • Bottom End:
      1. Crankshaft balancing
      2. Crankshaft - Possibly grinding new journals
      3. Conrod Balancing
      4. Honing - Cylinder Liners
      5. Boring - Possibly might be needed since two cylinders had some rust on them
      6. Engine Block Resurfacing - Possibly might be needed
      7. Flywheel Balancing
    • Top End:
      1. New Valve Guides install
      2. Recut New Valve Seats
      3. Cylinder Heads Resurfacing
    Parts

As much as possible I tried thinking and listing everything which I think will be needed:
    • New:
      1. Pistons - 10.5:1 High Compression Pistons (possibly Larger Bore) with new Gudgeon Pins and Rings
      2. Freezer Plugs
      3. Camshafts - Fast Road Camshafts
      4. Valves
      5. Performance Valve Springs
      6. Valve Stem Seals
      7. Valve Guides
      8. Full engine gasket set
      9. Full engine oil seal set
      10. Con Rod Bearing Set
      11. Main Bearing Set
      12. Thrust Bearing Set
      13. Clutch Kit
      14. Custom exhaust manifolds and backbox
      15. Cylinder Liner O Rings
      16. New Bearings, for timing belt pulleys etc
    • Reuse old ones:
      1. Conrods
      2. Conrod Bolts
      3. Cylinder Head Studs (I don't intend to remove them from the engine)
    Tests

As we go along I intend to perform the following tests prior to start up/installment:
    1. Valve Seat Sealing Test
    2. Leakdown Test
    3. Compression Test
After approximately 1 month since the engine was taken out of the car I finally had the change to start wrenching on the engine. The engine is fully dissasembled with the excemption of the cylinder heads! I intend to tackle these sometime this coming week.

    Injection or carbs?

It is my understanding that a 328 crankshaft is a direct swap fit for the OEM 308 crank, thus giving you increased displacement / better low end torque. Of course, you would need to have custom complimentary pistons made so to reflect the longer stroke. But since you note that you are planning to be replacing them with new anyway, this idea wouldn't represent any additional steps.

Car is Carb from factory, ngl I'm inclined to going Injection with a set of ITBs however at this stage I think I'll go with carbs, if it proves that it's impossible to tune I will certainly be going ITBs. I have a Fiat with a Lampredi Twin Cam which I recently swapped out its IDFs with a pair of Jenvey Heritage ITBs, I'm also planning the same on a vintage Alfa Nord Engine. Both will be running on a Microsquirt ECU. So it definitely won't be the first.

Good work on getting everything out and appart! I just did my engine that had over 200K km, and there was only significant wear on the cylinder liners. The crankshaft was in excellent conditions and only needed new bearings. I think that the metal surface treatment was very well done by the factory and holds up well if cared for. Of course, new valves and valve guides as you noted. By the way, I went with oversized high-comp pistons and boring of the original cylinder liners. This entailed re-jetting the carbs (with lots of great help from Ferraripilot) to get the engine to run smoothly. You can read about it here:

Buona fortuna and keep us posted!

Thanks for the tips! Did you bore the liners inside the engine block or outside? And did you change the o-ring?

On another note does anyone know the minimum allowable thickness for the cylinder head and from where to where I should measure mine?

That should be in the workshop manual, but if I recall, it would take decking the head and removing something like 1mm to reach its minimum, so there's a good bit of room with these. That said, I don't recommend decking them more than the minimum amount to get them flat which is normally .004-.005

I definitely want to remove the minimum amount possible hence why I'm asking so that when I take it to the machine shop I can emphasise and confirm that the least possible is removed.

Hi, I removed the cylinders from the block. This is best practice as you anyway want to change the old O-rings. Also, the machine shop that did the work made up a jig to compress the liners as if they were in the block. This way, they are true once the heads are torqued.
On the positive side, although I don't have a stock engine to compare, I can safely state that the car drives absolutely fantastic, pulling away smoothly even from low rpms :D

I would also suggest fixing the sniffer tubes attached to the exhaust headers, they are invaluable for correctly tuning the carbs using a gas analyser.

Do you have the shop manual? They are relatively easy to get hold of
