When modified, what was required for the US market at the time?

Forgive my exuberance. Any time I see more than one GTO in a shot, I get extra excited.

Well perhaps we can forgive them, they are official Kessel PR images, good ones at that.

I couldn't even tell you with any degree of accuracy as it seemed different from car to car, save to say that Federalization from that era didn't look good, quite forgettable, all I concern myself with nowadays is that hopefully all traces of it have been eliminated in the few cars that suffered that fate, which seems to be the case.

The late Ron Tonkin was very gracious in promising to send it to the even, and he did.

The team at Patrick Ottis Co. found a remnant. Disconnected, but still present non factory sensor.

I was inspired in 1985 when I first saw the car in Manchester. I was on my motorcycle and she passed me in the tunnel at the airport. I followed her to the Hilton and that was that.

Bottom line: Joe, we need another reunion, 56653 will be there.

I'm guessing that car was one looked after by William Loughran in Preston, Lancashire, did you get any pics?

My first 288 GTO sighting beats everyone's:

It's late 1985, I'm stuck in traffic at the lights on Sloan Street in Knightsbridge, London, I can see a car pulling alongside me with stalk mirrors that looks like the new 288 GTO, I look over and it is, the gentleman behind the wheel? Mick Jagger.

    Can I tell you something?

It was @ 11pm at night, and the girl in the car beside him definitely wasn't Jerry Hall!:D

Who you gonna believe, me or my own eyes? ;)

The government agencies you needed to satisfy didn't mandate what you needed to do, only what the results were so there was a lot of variables. Every one done through our dealer is pretty easy to spot. The shop that actually converted them took the entire exhaust out from the manifold collectors back, put in some catalytic converters and a single pipe out the back. Since the OE muffler was out the bumper reinforcements passed through where the muffler used to be. When the stock equipment was all reinstalled by who knows??? the bumper reinforcements were partially cut away to make room for the OE exhaust. On quite a few GTOs I can still see the partially cut away reinforcements. Dead giveaway who did, and undid the federalization. Just look underneath for diagonally cut square tubing at the extreme left and right ends of the muffler. The stock bumpers are so light and fragile as I recall they all had a different set of bumpers installed.

Also the fuel system needed to be sealed and a charcoal canister installed, door side guard beams which most still have, side marker lights, key buzzer. and a fuel restrictor so leaded gas could not be put in. A few other trivial items. Big boxes of parts came back with every car.

Most were converted with the thought in mind they would not stay that way. For one thing it was less expensive and maximum profits drove the methodology.
