I've been researching this but can't seem to find the answer.... What exactly are EE plates? and the purpose? Thanks..
Yes correct it stands for "Escursionisti Esteri" and they are plates that you can request when a car is designated for export and as a result you pay no Italian sales taxes at the time of purchase. I have bought several cars in this way in Italy (and obvisouly it's great due to the tax savings) when planning to take them to the UK. If you can get the car insured with those plates on in your home country (even if only for a while) it allows you to sail through speed cameras with gay abandon outside of Italy since no can trace the plates haha
The vast majority of all GTOs built were collected at the factory with EE plates on, and many still have these affixed. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/142278793-post7013.html http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/137802017-post1384.html http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/142277764-post7006.html http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/137344375-post703.html http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/142277811-post7008.html http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/137344381-post705.html http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/137344419-post709.html Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I love seeing these plates on the cars. They look so "right". I noticed the one link for "EE 023 AK" stated there was no info. As the post was from 2008, I'm pretty sure you found more details on the car since. From memory, that car was the "Patrick Collection" car, later registered in the UK as "426 GTO". I believe the picture was taken during the drive back from Italy and featured in a MOTOR magazine article around June 1985.
Well, Joe, I would not really call it the "vast majority". Here's a list of the 288 GTO's delivered new with EE license plates: EE 011 AK EE 013 AE EE 013 AK EE 015 AK EE 018 AK EE 023 AK EE 024 AK EE 031 AK EE 032 AK EE 033 AK EE 034 AK EE 049 AK EE 050 AK EE 062 AK EE 065 AK EE 074 AK EE 076 AK EE 082 AK EE 083 AK EE 084 AK EE 085 AK EE 086 AK EE 087 AK EE 089 AK EE 091 AK EE 093 AK EE 095 AK EE 096 AK EE 109 AK EE 110 AK EE 111 AK EE 114 AK EE 119 AK EE 127 AK EE 149 AK EE 154 AK EE 155 AK EE 160 AK EE 169 AK EE 172 AK EE 177 AK EE 183 AK EE 186 AK EE 188 AK EE 189 AK EE 190 AK EE 196 AK EE 200 AK EE 206 AK EE 210 AK EE 221 AK EE 253 AK EE 304 AK EE 498 AK That's 54 cars. With EE 200 AK belonging to 58345 and EE 304 AK belonging to Lauda's 58329, did some GTOs stay at the factory longer than others awaiting collection? EE 498 AK in particular seems quite outside the range of other car's plates.
Marcel, I salute you! I will adjust my statement to "a significant percentage". My point was, they are not exactly rare with GTOs. Thank you for the list, this thread is a great resource.
Yes, several 288's stayed longer at the factory for collection. Also, some cars got their EE plates early but then remained at the factory for weeks because parts were missing. Please note that these EE plates were not issued by the Ferrari factory in Maranello but by the Ministry of Transportation. EE plates still exist today, some buyers of a brand new LaFerrari pick their car up at the factory with EE plates. Marcel Massini
Thankyou for the reply. It is interesting to see newer cars with these same plates. Always a dream to have a set of my own attached to the appropriate car for factory collection. One day.....
Are they the same as the older ones? When picking up Euro Delivery BMWs I've gotten these. Image Unavailable, Please Login
This is a German customs plate from Munich, valid for either six or twelve months. It means that you will have to pay import taxes and VAT in whichever country you import this car, once these customs plates expire. Marcel Massini
Yes. In this case six months and all normal taxes are paid to the US and individual state authorities. I assumed that they were EU standard plates. Do individual countries still issue plates in their own configuration?
