Hi Guys, I am searching for pictures of the 250 GT California Spider chassis 2537GT. The car is known for being the former personal car of racing driver Wolfgang von Trips once. Unless this fact is quite unlikely, it is a great myth. The car belongs to the collection of Engelbert Stieger in Switzerland. Irrespective of whether the car was owned by von Trips or not, it is very beautiful, so I would be happy to see pics of it, there are nearly none of them on the net (just the two in the barchetta registry). Thanks in advance, Trossi
Pics are hard to find. i once had the chance to visit the stieger collection but he asked us, not to publish any of the pictures. i have to respect that. 2537GT is a great car with unusual features, like the unique dashboard.
sure, but don't you wonder why? It is one thing to keep a car locked away, it is another thing to prevent pictures of it to spread around.
The instruments are in front of the driver as far as I know. This is unique among the Californias. I truly respect if Mr. Stieger doesnt want the visitors of his collection to spread the pictures taken in his garage on the net. But there must exist some pictures which can be posted I guess...
Two pics on barchetta.cc website : http://www.barchetta.cc/english/All.Ferraris/Detail/2537GT.250GT.SWB.California.Spyder.htm
There are seven pictures of 2537GT between pages 114-121, and a written overview on the California Spyder in English, German, French, and Italian. Hope this helps.
one of the nicest Ferrari Picturebooks available, big in size and very, very affordable and with the well know quality of Schlegelmilch-Pictures. Serial Number of each car is given in addition. I've seen it on sale in Germany for at least around 25$. I think it's at least the 2nd or 3rd edition, that is available, always updated. Last one includes the Scaglietti, if I remember right. http://www.amazon.de/Ferrari-Hartmut-Lehbrink/dp/383311231X/ref=pd_ts_b_4?ie=UTF8&s=books
The wonderful Schlegelmilch-Fotos are online: www.xxxxxxxxxxxxx.com (Name of Mr. S.) link "Automobile picture archive" - browse by company and type. One Shot of the dashboard - respect copyright by schlegelmilch! best, Till p.s.: I also have this wonderful book, earlier edition, and it was the first Ferrari-book i bought, it startet my collection. correct ... and correct again if everybody likes it or not - if a collector asks not to spread the pics i will respect it. that helps a lot to get invited to other collections in the future.
agreed - I fully respect that too especially with photos taken privately visiting the collection, but.... ...the foto I posted above is available for everybody on the net, it is provided by a well known photographer. So I think it's okay to post this one. Do you agree? Please correct me if I'm wrong. Best, Till.
for sure ! absolutely agreed ! thats not a pic you made at an invitation being asked to keep it privately.
Thank you, I'm relieved to hear that... I wondered if I did something wrong - that copyright-thing is a little bid delicate. Till.
I believe it was a 1961 250 GT Cabriolet Series II (s/n 2361) which carried the coffin of Von Trips from his castle to the church. Does anyone know where that car is today?
It looks like 2361GT still lives in Germany. http://www.barchetta.cc/english/all.ferraris/Detail/2361GT.250GT.PF.Convertible.SII.htm
I remember seeing a photo of the procession when I was young and it always stuck with me. I think I have it somewhere but so far have been unable to find it. In the meantime, follow this link to the FML Fact of the Day and look at Wednesday, 16 August, 2006 http://www.ferrarimarketletter.com/factoftheday.cfm?changeissue=next&&
There are 2 small b&w shots of 2537 in George Carricks book "The Spyder California A Ferrari of Particular Distinction" pg 48 of the the unique dash and pg 56 of the front half of the car depicting the lack of a side vent. The text also says 2537 was one of only 2 that had an external, lockable gas cap - the same that was fitted to the Pininfarina Cabriolets. Its interesting that the SC's prototype - 0769GT - had a similar dash arrangement with most of the dials - except 2 which are still to the right - are under one single-arch cowl. I wonder if this was the original owner's inspiration. Also in Stanely Nowaks book "Spyder California" its mentioned twice, but no photos. The other unique qualities: the engine has velocity stacks and a cold air pan. Interestingly, the build date is July 18 1961, and thefirst owner is mentioned as being William Jean Savy of Switzerland. Add onto this that Von Trips (sadly) died September 10, 1961, Von Trips could not have owned it for very long. Perhaps Savy backed out of the deal and never actually took delivery... or sold it directly to Von Trips upon hearing of his interest (not for a profit, if he hoped to ever order another one... ) GT
Thank you very much for the information and the b&w picture of 2361GT, guys! This is why some people say it is very unlikely that he ever owned it, but no one has proven that black is white so far.
Interesting thread,on the ACI/PRA documents for the plate "MO 64497" would be a lot of answers.. i don't have them ,someone other surely.. regards ivo
Chassis 2361Gt seem to be definetely a former von Trips car. Another good question regarding 2537GT is, why he should have purchased another Ferrari Spider just months after he already bought one. This is only traceable partially. Marcel Massini wrote in this forum once, that it is completely bull***t that von Trips owned 2537GT - very strong words but he didnt back it up with any arguments, so maybe it was his spontaneous appraisement.
The "Taffy Trips Cockpit" of 2537 GT can be seen here. http://www.automobil-rennsport.de/images/07280002.jpg
