Dear community! Help me understand this model! I know that the test car was shown in the press in 1990 and was a turbocharged version of the Ferrari 348 - the car was called 248T in the article. Unfortunately, these are all the photos I have - maybe you have others or higher quality ones?

P.S. Few people know that in Maranello in the late 80s and early 90s, serious developments were underway on an even more interesting power unit. The 8-cylinder twin-turbo engine Type F121A. The author of the project was the famous Italian engineer Nicolo Materazzi, the author of engines for such sports cars as the Dino, Ferrari 288 GTO, F40 and Bugatti EB110. Only three copies were assembled. One of them is stored in the Ferrari museum, and the block numbered 00002, the one shown in the photo, was put up for sale by the RM auction house.
So, the technical characteristics of this engine were even more interesting than those of the basic Type F119.
V8 with a 90-degree cylinder block angle. The cylinder block itself and the cylinder head are made of light alloys. Weber IAW fuel injection system. The working volume is 1997 cc. The cylinder diameter is 77 mm. The piston stroke is 53.6 mm. Compression ratio: 7.7. 4 valves per cylinder, 4 overhead camshafts (DOHC) with belt drive. Power: 400 hp at 7500 rpm. Unfortunately, due to the above, difficult financial situation of the company, this project never went into action, and the Ferrari 348 series was launched with the Type F119 engine.

So, was this a Ferrari project or a third party tuner project?

The one with gear drive is definitely Ferrari. The other one is likely Ferrari due to the low compression ratio.

I have never seen pictures of that gear driven camshaft engine - thank you for sharing. No timing belt change or engine out, the engine is more compact and the timing is even more accurate … so perhaps it was just to good to become true.
