I'm re-posting this photo in the hopes that someone can help me in identifying the two stripes that parallel the dark blue center stripe on John Surtees' car. So far knows anything about them, yet, the stripes are clearly shown and are not any shadow. This is a fascinating unknown marking to me as I would like to add it as an example of another typo158. Can anyone help?

Hard to say in B&W but I'd suspect they are red.

Added to the normally assigned blue/white for United States entries, possibly to avoid confusion with another car???

NART often did a red/blue strip combo on entries....

You can see the second NART car does NOT have them, I often vary the markings slightly like this on two identical cars, so you can see which driver is which.....

According to the race report in Competition Press:

"Ferrari showed up with four cars painted in genuine American racing colors....the cars were two V8's, a V6, and a V12. Surtees had his choice of the 8's, said they were both three mph slower down the straights than has last year's V6, but went with one anyway. Bandini tried both the 6 and 12, went with the 12..."

So it would seem that one of the V8's run by Surtees had the extra stripes as shown in your picture. The car he used in the race itself did not have the extra stripes.

My thanks to both of you for your responses. I agree that the stripes might be red (again B&W is difficult to "read") and I have another photo from the same collection that shows the other V8 with a"T" and no stripes. The V12 that CP&A reports was, of course, the 1512 flat 12. I hope to get verified proof of the red stripes someday. Not many people are interested in this sort of esoteric thing, but the typo158 series is my favorite Ferrari F1 car.

Well, I'm back again in my quest for color proof of the flanking stripes on the NART cars in 1964. It has taken awhile, but I discovered these two new color slides on another forum site and it shows conclusively that the "T" was in red as was thought. I'm hoping proof of the main blue stripe's flanking stripes are red also and can be proven by another color photo. Does anyone remember the first day the cars arrived at the Glen?

Just as guess: Green...to match the red stripe for the Italian flag. So, the racing colors as well as the national colors would have been represented for both Italy and the US.

Perhaps, but I'm seeking color proof. I think the extra stripes are red like the "T" marking as in the grey "T" in the B&W photo which is red in the color pix.

Judging from the cowl on the "8" car in the background, it looks like they go as far as the number circle.

I just asked my Dad - who was at that race, they used to keep the Ferrari's down in Watkins Glen, and on Friday Practice he was following the team up the hill in his Porsche... as they drove the cars up to the track.

He confirmed all stripes were blue - he could not remember the exact shade of blue, but thought that it may be becuase of Surtees having a test car as well as race cars and the 512 V12 at the track. he said they ran the V-12 on Friday but saturday or the race. there were no red Ferrari's at all in North America that year.
