Not sure this qualifies as a technical question but not sure where else to post. I am a newbie looking to buy my first Ferrari (328 or 355 - still evaluating which one). I notice that some Ferraris have yellow fender shields and others do not. Are shields an option at the time of purchase or an aftermarket add-on? Do they have a particular significance or meaning other than esthetic?

    Thank you.

Not an option for the 328 or 355 but a stick on.

The fender shields were originally only fitted to specials. From the 360 onwards it became a factory order option. An expensive one too if I remember.

The shields are metal and bolt to a recess section of the fender.

Ferrari sell the sticker type, as do third parties. The Ferrari stickers are vinyl, they do look very good and are self adhesive.

It's a personal choice thing, for newer cars it's considered a must have option in the UK for resale value. That's what the main dealer told me anyway.

Fender shields are usually not factory options before 1998 or so... except for 288 GTO and F-40.

The Shield is called the Scudetto - its the oldest trademark of scuderia Ferrari- started by Enzo Ferrari back in the late 20's using Alfa Romeo racing cars.

after WWII all cars made by Ferrari carried the rectangular badge with the prancing horse itailan colors at the top and the name Ferrari in the typical Ferrari script at the bottom. all cars - racing or street cars had this.

racing cars raced by the Factory / reparto corse ( Enzo Ferrari ) carried the Scudetto... however it was popular to carry the scudetto in the 60's on customer cars as a sign that you had a Ferrari - there was no trade mark enforcement at the time. today you have to be sanctioned by the factory to carry the scudetto in racing and or have it come with the car - 458 italia when you purchase the car.

I have them on my 328 - becuase I'm a huge F-1 fan and its my personal homage to Enzo.... you can find them in sticker form, raised plastic resin or full metal resin cloisonnee ...

Go with the magnetic shields. They look better than the thin sticker ones and won't damage the paint. Plus sometimes you might feel like a shield and sometimes you might not.

For what ever reason they (the factory ones) are a must have for resale. except for racing versions never saw them on the early everyday cars, nor did we ever think of them. Times have changed at least for now, they are a highlight, sort of like a designers diaper. Have them on my current car, but was not a deal maker as from the old school.

There are two kinds of magnetic shields, a thin, flat variety and a slightly thicker one with a beveled edge that looks a lot better and is not that much more expensive. The latter are a much cheaper alternative to the resin or metal ones and look just fine.

Thats true for newer cars. On a 328 if the car is entered into an FOC concours with shields it will get points deducted.

I didnt realise magnetic ones were available. I tried making some magnetic but they didnt stick to any part of the car strongly enough. Unless I have the only fiberglass 328 ever made! And no, there isnt any body filler on it. They stick to the fridge OK. Maybe the Zincrox steel is not so magnetic.

The Fioranos had them sunk into the fenders. I think it was also an option on regular production 355's. Maybe only the later ones.

In 1998 Ferrari began offering a wide variety of options through their Carrozzeria Scaglietti Program. This included such things as custom paint and leather interiors. Carbon fiber trim, painted brake calipers, "Daytona" seats and fender shields to name a few.

If you want them on a 328, got for it if you like it, I suppose.

But, do understand that "shields", of any type, were never official factory items ----- as such, Ferrari never intended that they be put on the 328.

I think I would be very tempted to use only shields that can be completely removed later.

And, if you price out what it costs to have the enamel ones properly mounted (by a quality body shop who actually knows how to do it correctly) by adding rescesses into the fenders (of any Ferrari) ---- the cost is quite staggering for such a relatively minor change.

The factory installed shields for the 360 came with the recesses in the fenders. I have the Ferrari enamel shields which are either bolt on or adhesive -- I have no idea which.

Paul- Right you are. Optional on 5.2 F355s and were also fitted to the Challenge 348s. Here is the F355 parts catalog page, courtesy of Ricambi.
