I was looking at various pictures of F50s and noticed that in some of the photos, the headlights are black, and some are the same color as the car. Why is that? Difference in years? Was black an option?

Ferrari (or whoever their supplier was) made red and black headlamps. All the red cars got red, all the other colors produced got black.

If you see a red car with black ones, it is probably 103921 that used to be Azzurro California (blue) and was later painted back to red.

If you see another color besides red that has headlamps that match the car, it is safe to assume that someone cracked them open and repainted them.

    That's my understanding, anyway.

That's very interesting. Thanks for the clarification. :)

Not so sure about that.. pretty sure all non-red cars came with matched headlights. The confusion started when the re-paints did.

Pretty sure my answer was closer. :)

His answer implies that the few Rosso Barchetta F50s that were made would have also had factory painted headlights. So basically it would have been the Silver and Yellow F50s delivered with non-matching lights, becuase the unpainted ones would have certainly worked on the Black cars.

In a low production like this, nothing is clear.

Marcel can clear it up, but I don't remember more than a few F50's having black headlights- and most were aftermarket. If I'm wrong it's under 10 units.. it not..

The yellow F50 in your photo actually belongs to the person I just quoted:

Here's a pic of Paul Frame's F50 delivered new as the first or second F50 in the USA (depending on which story you have heard) with its black headlights.

There are 95 pics in my 'F50 - Yellow' folder - only two cars have body color headlamp housings and those are 360C's car and one in Japan.

My 'F50 - Silver' folder is quite similar - one US car and one Japanese car have painted headlamps, the rest are black.

According to WheelsofItaly.com the color breakdown for the original 349 was like this:

    Rosso Corsa (Red) : 302
    Giallo Modena (Yellow) : 31
Rosso Barchetta (Dark red) : 8
    Argento Nurburgring (Silver) : 4
    Nero Daytona (Black) : 4

So that's just 35 F50s that would have had non-matching headlamps.

QV500.com claims customers were given a choice:

"the F50 was officially only available in five colours, Rosso Corsa, Rosso Barchetta, Giallo Fly, Nero and Argento. However, some cars were finished in special order shades and although there were no options as such, customers could decide whether of not they wanted black-finish headlight surrounds."

That doesn't quite make sense to me though - the black headlamps look a little awkward and I can't imagine anyone choosing them.

Yup, that's my car. I bought a second set of lights and had them painted in yellow.
The spare parts book makes it clear which colours had black and which had body coloured surrounds. As far as I am aware there wasn't a choice offered to the original customers; but no doubt if you had enough influence it could be arranged.

Ive seen pics of the Azzuro California car, the white cars in Japan, the Grigio Silverstone car in the UK. Are there any other F50s which have had a colour change to something other than the standard colours?

There was this darker blue one that surfaced, though I am not aware if it is an original color or a repaint?

    Blue F50

There's only one real photo of the car in that thread, and later another shot from the front eventually surfaced via ExoticSpotter. I found that thread too, but the image was never embeded and is now no longer available via the link that was provided, so I will upload it here.

For the record - yes, we noticed it is missing a turn signal. ;)

This car reminds me of Ken Follett's "Whiteout". One of the main characters in the book owns a blue F50. I would have never thought that a real one existed.

    ok thanks for that.

Is there any more information/pics on the white Liberty Walk F50? I have also noticed the yellow modified F50 with roof scoops has Speedline wheels similar to the GT. Seen these on a red japanese car also. Are these the same wheels that are fitted to the GT?

Yeah, the white one was possibly stolen from a dealership in the US when it was taken for a test drive. Shipped off to Japan, painted white...Japanese authorities couldn't care less about recovering it and exporting back to the US. Or so the rumors say...
