Almost since we started MAcarbon in 2003, we’ve been getting carbon repair requests. We’ve never put any marketing effort into it, so projects found their way to us from dealers or customers who decided to ask. We’ve repaired everything from small chips on 599 consoles, to half-destroyed Scud diffusers. We finally added a repair section to our website to make it easier for people to see what was possible as well as answer some common questions. Here is the link to that area of the site: https://www.macarbon.com/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=443&vmcchk=1&Itemid=443&redirected=1&Itemid=443

We’ve done a few repairs for one of the Ferrari dealers in the mid-west. Recently, they had a customer with an F50 that needed some help. They sent us over two tail light buckets, a shift knob, and a seat belt receptacle surround. The knobs and buckles surrounds are common F50 issues. We’d not seen the taillight buckets before. first photos are of the pieces as we received them.

Once we received the parts, each part was evaluated to determine the best repair method. The seat belt surround’s clear coat and resin had milked up so much that you could barely see the carbon. We came to the conclusion that the discoloration went through the finish and through the carbon. There was no way to just strip the finish and re-clear it. So the piece was sanded down a bit and a fresh layer of carbon put down. This increases the thickness by about 1mm. But there was plenty of clearance for this part so it’s not a problem.

The shift knob had milked up as well. This was our fifth shift knob that we have restored so there was no debate on what to do with this one. For knobs, we grind off all of the resin and clear coat around the ball and removed the Ferrari horse. We add a new horse (its sold by Ferrari for a different purpose!) and then almost like a candy apple, reapply the resin. Once it’s all adjusted, we polish the resin and metal ring. We did a blog post on our website about another knob we did for the same dealer a few months ago. You can see it here: https://www.macarbon.com/blog/?p=1986

The final two pieces were the taillight buckets. Over the years one had turned brown while the other still looked ‘normal’. Due to the size and shape, laminating wasn’t really an option. And since its in the engine bay, we just needed to get it close. So we sanded off the burnt clear coat on the bad bucket. Then on the good bucket, we did a light sand simply to prepare for new clear. We finished off the buckets with a coat of satin clear coat.

It’s always fun working on the hyper-exotics like the F50. It gives us some really cool projects to work on. If you need some help with CF on your F50, ‘just’ your 430, or any exotic for that matter, feel free to contact us.
