i just drained the oil and removed the circular piece to access the mesh filter. This piece was incredibly difficult to remove. I also noticed some white sealant around the metal pieces edges. I am putting everything back togetther and was curious if I shpuld be using some kind of sealant.

I watched our fellow f chatter Daniel's video's and he did not use any. I noticed that the circular piece in his video also had the same white sealent. Should I just replace the o ring and torque to spec? Link to vid:

Any advice is greatly appreciated. If someone has a link to DYI with torque specs that would also be appreciated.

Here is the document from the wsm ..the torque for the oil drain plug is believed to be too high but the rest of the document should be ok

You should not have to put any rtv sealant if you put a new gasket which I would recommend

If you want that extra protection ..maybe consider locktite 518

Replace the circular flange O-ring. I added a thin layer of gasket sealant for security.
I'm curious how many people actually change the mesh filter? I did mine last year and it looked like the original one after over ten years of life. It had all sort of crud/shards caught in the filter. Mind you it only has ~8K miles.

Thanks for the help. I am having a hell of a time getting the clip out to realeasetge mesh filter. Did you use a special tool. In the instructions it says to leverage out the clip with screw driver. I tried this and failed miserably. Any pointers? I imagine there is a specific tool to use and it will just pop out:)

Great document. I would certainly use these instructions and not that video.

Old thread but just happened to see it. I also have the large drain with the white sealant around it. No need to remove it if you have a vacuum of some sort to get up in there and ensure there are no particles of anything up in there on the screen. There was nothing on mine but the car only has just under 16k miles and has had regular oil changes.
