Recently bought a 2008 F430 and noticed the default setting for the F1 is the Auto mode. Is this normal? I push the Auto button to turn it off.

I've also heard or read that using the automatic trans. will accelerate the clutch wear. Is this true?

I know that reversing is hard on the clutch.

I was lucky as the car only had 4,700 miles on it with only 4% clutch wear (94% original thickness remaining).

    thanks,
    Mike

Reverse is not as rough on the clutch with an F430 as it is in a 360 or a 575M, both of which have very high speed reverse gears. They improved that on the F430, from a reverse gear with a 2.562:1 ratio for the 360 to 2.73:1 for the F430. Still a bit high, but better.

Yes it defaults to Auto mode. My 2009 does the same. Try not to back up any hills in reverse.

Good news about reverse. What about using the automatic mode?

Mine runs around in auto for 7 years and no problems. Avoid manual in low gears and lots of revs as the bottom of the car under the engine is covered, not much air flow to cool the exhaust, when car not moving a reasonable speed
Mine has 15000 miles and clutch wear around 20%, not increased much in years

I have owned my F1 Ferrari for over 13 years and have never used Auto mode and never will. These are manual transmission Ferraris with electro hydraulic actuation of the transmission and clutch. The best way to enjoy an F1 Ferrari is to drive it just like you drive a three pedal, but with one pedal missing.

Maybe what you were hearing was a reference to freewheeling to a stop vs. the automatic mode moving through all the gears back to first when coming to a complete stop? Every time you use the clutch I assume it causes wear, so perhaps putting it in neutral when coming to a stop will extend the clutch life a bit? I tend to do this when driving less aggressive.

Yes I tend to downshift to 2nd than go to neutral when approaching a stop. When I first got it my left foot was searching for that third pedal.

On an unrelated topic, do other owners have success using their radios? Mine acts as though the antenna is not plugged in. My CD player works great though.

Had any dash or passenger airbag maintenance recently?

For information, there is an antenna pre-amp (possibly behind the airbag?).

See the device which connector S021 is attached to:

It looks like the radio unit supplies a voltage to the amplifier.

The radio comes out easy enough with a pair of release keys, so you can check the connections

Thanks for all the great info. As to the air bag being handled I don't think so, however all the interior controls/buttons were removed and sent to Sticky no More for sticky removal. Wondering if this disruption could have impacted the radio?

Looking at the diagram above, it seems that the antenna goes out next to the right hand vent. IF they removed that is it possible they pulled on it and unplugged it?
Check there first .. also remove radio and see if it's plugged in.

There is 3 plugs for antenna
    One behind radio

    One near firewall

One near glass under plastic panels i think

Also if you use a plug in cigarette lighter bluetooth or charger sometimes they cut reception if poor filtering

Thanks for all the good tips, and I will pass these on to the Ferrari techs. at it's next service though they should know the system thoroughly.
As a new owner and being nearly 70 I don't have the skill set or drive to investigate this myself. Plus I don't want to screw up what is otherwise a very nice car.

    thanks again to all

No need to touch the auto button. It sets off in first so just use the paddle to change to second. The console buttons will wear out over time so the paddles are a better option.

Thanks for the tip. I'll try that next time. I have found that I have to push the console button more than once to get the Auto to shut off.

So the car always starts in Auto. When you use the paddle to shift into second, it’s no longer in Auto Mode?

I think this whole subject of clutch fear rumors are greatly exaggerated "from the old days", certainly should not be an issue for late F430s. I drive mine in auto most of the time, especially if in traffic! Worst case scenario a clutch change every 30,000 miles? Just enjoy the car!

Yes. A tip I found on my 599: Once you get rolling in 1st pull the down paddle. Gear won't change but it jumps out of auto mode. I drove my 360 for 13 years and never figured that little trick out, oh well.

I assume if you pull on the Up paddle (while on Auto 1st gear) it will also jump out of Auto to Manual, right?
