F430 Blue Flames

The F430 in the Miami Vice movie shot blue flames from the exhaust as well.

Can you say illegal?

 

Kinda pointless IMO. Except for a cool reaction from people behind you it does nothing in terms of performance for the driver. I am curious as to why it happened as well.

 

It seems to happen pretty regularly on stock cars during full throttle upshifts. There is excess fuel dumped into the cylinders and out the exhaust on upshifts arising from throttle overrun. I don't know if this is deliberate (dumping fuel onto exhaust valves to help cool them), poor throttle mapping, or just unavoidable due to the response time of the fuel injection system and the high fuel flow needed with these engines.

 

I do not think its a matter of poor throttle mapping, well at least not for the FCars. It's a matter of excess fuel being dumped which causes the flames. I've seen FCars with aftermarket exhaust systems without cats do this all the time and the difference in a well factory tuned FCar is that the tips don't end up turning black as coal like in race cars that are tuned to run rich.

It's perfectly harmless fun!

 

yep this used to happen with my 944 Turbo when it was running rich (or mistuned)... not sure why it would run rich on stock F430s

 

Does this not cause any issues with the rear bumper cover...as in melting it...or at least leaving marks?

 

Probably not for 430 as the tips stick out. But the Scud maybe.

 

This is because it has a straight threw exhaust.
Basically it has aftermarket headers that delete the precats, then they replace the secondary cats with straight pipes, and then the valves bypass the muffler completely so you basically see the explosions that take place inside the engine as they come out the valves.
Capristo has a similar video of their scuderia conversion firing up flames.

 

So what is the consensus is this stock or aftermarket?

 

My 355 shoots blue flames after I installed decat pipes. Stock motor tune with fresh major service. You just need to remove the cats, and you too can have exhaust flames.

 

I have not seen flames come out of a vehicles exhaust that had factory Cats at operating temperature.

I would expect flames on a F430 / Scud / 360 with no pre-cats and test-pipes (basically no cats).

I developed and installed a system to intentionally blow flames, and I did test the system with cats and found no visible flames.

I also tested the system with cat bypass pipes and there were nice flames on both vehicles.

With cats operating as expected there should not be any fuel to burn post-cat.

 

I can confirm a bone stock F430 does shoot out blue flames on wide open throttle up shifts. I raced my current F430 with my former 360 at night and when the F430 was ahead I could see the blues flames during all the gear changes. This is likely attributed to the temporary fuel dumps in pipe during clutched periods. I have never seen any damaged facia or valance on any F430.

I am pretty sure the cats are fine, the car did it when new and still does it the same. I also got the warranty update for new exhaust and the results are yet again the same. Its just a function of the shift delay not other...

I stand corrected. I assumed it was some device that produced the flames. I've heard of this setup used on other cars. I knew turbocharged cars would emit some flame when getting off the throttle from high RPMs. I did not know this was possible with normally aspirated cars.

 

I know what you mean. Those are flame throwers usually installed on rice mobiles.

The "crackle" you hear on the overrun is unspent fuel being burned in your exhaust. Technically the "blue flames" are happening every time you hear the "crackle" when you let off the gas (which is pretty much every time) however you can't see it because 1. it's daytime, and 2. the engine speed/temperatures are too low and the gas is getting shot out slowly enough that it's vaporizing and burning before it exits the exhaust tips.

If you're engine is warm, and you're shifting at full throttle, when the F1 system lets off the gas on an upshift, some fuel should vaporize and shoot out the exhaust as it explodes, and there's your blue flame.

Murcielagos do this too, modern exotics no longer do this (fuel gets burned way before they reach the exhaust tips).

 

True, which is why its so much easier to see it on Scuderias due to the shorter path of exhaust travel.

i can say i have personally seen blue flames coming from my cs, scuds, a 430 spider, the f40, and the LP570.
