    Hi,

Just went out to take the F40 for a spin and it just will not start. 2 weeks ago it ran perfectly, I did 100 miles and it didn't miss a beat. its been serviced 2 months ago and battery is full of life. engine just spins and spins but doesn't fire at all ? when the ignition is switched on you hear the fuel pumps prime, but then thats it and it won't start no matter how long i spin the motor for. it has 1/2 tank of fresh fuel.

I can't understand what it could be, anyone got any ideas before I call Ferrari service ?

    Any ideas welcome !

    regards
    Neil

Don't keep cranking a motor that will not start for long periods of time. You're washing fuel into the engine, past the rings into the oil. Have it towed to your service place. Smell the dipstick and if you smell fuel get it the oil changed. You can also damage the rings if you don't stop.

It could be a number of things hopefully not major.

    Good Luck

    Cheers

It's not sparking, tow it to the dealer.

Who services it for you? I like using Dick Lovett in Swindon

    Best of luck

couple of turns of the crank is not going to cause bore wash so dont panic. Over years maybe but not just a few times.

Sounds like primary ignition, probably a dry or loose/corroded/damp connection, especially with the weather we have been having, otherwise at least one bank would fire as they are run by separate ecu. It will be a feed before these no doubt.

Not sure if they use a shared crank sensor on the F40 but this is often suspect on other marelli equipped engines using the same ecu.

First thing to do is move/twiddle etc every connection you can see in the engine bay before sending it off to the dealers.

I wouldn't mess with it. This is happening for a reason that needs rectification/repair by the dealer after checking it over. If you can somehow get it started, you run the risk of this happening again somewhere inconvenient.

Its a late 80s car, no different to any other, dont be afraid of it just because its worth a lot of money in comparison to other late 80s cars.

They were all made of the same basic components, ferrari mechanics are no different to any other mechanic, they will go through a checklist just like one thats fixing a humble fiat.

If your not mechanically minded then steer well clear regardless of the type of car but if your are practical then you wont do any harm trying to isolate the problem area yourself first.

Hi Gents ….you'll enjoy this !

So after day of carrying out every check imaginable on the the F40 in my garages at home, after discovering that we had ignition sparking, and that if we removed both fuel pump relays and linked them out the pumps would run and the car would start, we knew it was an electrical gremlin or short affecting the fuel pumps. 4 more hours checking every connection under the dash, disconnecting every male /female connector and checking their contact, with Dick Lovett Ferrari of Swindon helping by phone for next ideas, we gave up and they travelled the 200 miles to collect the car. I've just had a call from them to say that after a full day they've discovered a kill switch under the handbrake leather gator !!! …..also they said it looks like a factory install ?? does anyone else know about this ? I must have knocked it some how when leaning over in the car at some point but I never knew it had a kill switch under there.

what a pain in the ****

hope it helps someone else at some point if this is standard !

    thanks all for getting involved.

    Neil

Hey, it could have been worse! It's a good thing it was just a kill switch. I didn't know they had them...

According to the diagnosis...the kill switch is disabling the fuel pumps ?

Seems strange that the fuel pumps would prime, electrics work and then engine crank over even though the kill switch is armed.

I would assume that a kill switch would not allow any power to the ignition and starter motor (ie non-startup) in order to prevent this situation?

This Kill switch just prevents the fuel pumps from running. When the Kill switch is flicked, spark plugs spark, engine cranks, just fuel pumps are off. Dick Lovett Ferrari says it looks like a factory install. Question is does anyone else's F40 have one ?

Is your F40 a 1992 or a different year? Maybe the kill switch was added near the end of production?

I would imagine it was installed at the request of the first owner, the early 90s were one of the worst periods for car thefts in the UK/ Europe and normal alarms were easy to bypass back then. I have always had such a switch hidden inside all my nice cars, killing the supply to the pumps.

An F40 is not exactly difficult to get into and hotwire, a basic switch like this confuses most thieves, mine certainly did on one car I owned in 1991, they got past all the installed security and a £2 switch saved my car from vanishing.

    Guys

    Sorry for the sporadic replies.

My F40 is an April 89 production. I will get a photo of the switch when back at home Friday.

could be useful as an anti theft but its in a very fiddly position/place as you will see when i post a picture.
