I would hope that Ferrari would just reassign 85397 to the chassis? I assume that the car will not be released by the authorities (to anyone) until this is sorted.
Allow me say that this has been an amazing read from post #1 to post #453.... simply amazing, it has read like a mystery novel that you just cannot put down once you have started the read...yet this is not a novel, but a true story with every conceivable twist and turn (& red herring's) one could imagine...also allow me to express my deepest respect for the knowledge and tenacity of dozens of posts and the FChat posters on this thread... I have clicked on most, if not all, of the links people posted in this thread and gained even more valuable insight into the authentication process as well as the surprisingly large market of fraudulent VIN's etc...'Caveat Emptor' for sure. The info on the multiple links within the posts has enlightened me in learning more about the F40 then I imagined possible. ... simply an amazing education and for Free... Lastly, there is no doubt that Marcel Massini is a World-Class authority on F40's, along with other Ferrari's I'm sure, as well as a Source & Sleuth of epic proportions... well done and thank you.
So what is the known history of 85397?
My guess done to avoid a hefty import duty/VAT bill at some stage?
Well unlucky for the perpetrators that the OP super sleuth Aircon aka The Troublemaker, picked up the serial number duplication.
The "real" 90969 in Sydney has found a buyer who is fully aware of its history. Car will remain in Australia, in another state.
Will be interesting to see what he thinks of it considering the other cars he's owned.
Meanwhile I will most probably soon have fresh information re 85397.......
Very good. The question of why the serial number was altered will be interesting to many on here.
Interesting story. Thank you Aircon.
Reason for switching serial number may be.
Car had a huge crash.
Part of some settlement battle e.g. divorce.
