My 95 F355 has a high pitched flute sound when first started for about 1 minute. Anybody know what this is? thanks

Not sure if it's the same noise, but the modern 12 cyl. cars 550, 456, etc. have a cold start-up whine. I've been told that it's caused by an emissions control air diversion or restriction during a cold start. Hopefully it's the same for the 355.

I asked that when i first got mine two years ago, and its still doing it:D, its normal its somthing to do with the air injection if i recall right. its only on for 2 mins, i dont drive the car until it stops, i dont think you get full power when its on. But yes its normal.

if yours doesn't do it then maybe the fuse has blown (not uncommon) :)

it's normal, to meet emmission requirments in certain parts it pumps fresh air into the exhaust so any measurement taken at the pipes is lower. Normally only on for a couple of minutes

Don't think it affects power output but you shouldn't be thrashinig it if it's that cold anyway :)

I did not say the word thrashed i said full power, but i do notice the car drives a little rough with the noise still on. Then it smooths out when it stops.

My 1997 355 does that...was told its called the muffler bypass or something like that and is known to LOCK in the open position. Just had mine opened up at the 30k so it didnt always do it.

Now just does it for few minutes. Totally normal as I was told....

Same, takes about 2-3 minutes to warm the car up and then it's gone. I never even pull my 355 out of the garage until it's done. Sounds like a kettle whistling.

We had a similar sound with the 360, but I would describe the sound as a more higher tone. The reason for this was anyways that at the last service they had forgetten to tighten the intake manifold (?right eng. word ?) , so it sat loose, and the engine sucked air through the wrong place, which caused this kind of whistling sound.

According to the service guy, the intake manifold untightens itself, and it should be tightened at every service, but they had obviously forgotten to do that.

Don't know if we are talking about the same sound or "problem" but just my 2 cents.

Electric pump runs for a few minutes until the cats are up to temperature. As mentioned it is common for the fuse to have blown.

Interesting point, my car has no cats and still does it for a couple of mins.

Normal sound, I have a friend who is a Ferrari tech and I asked him about it...say to forget about it. Just the air pump running during the cold idle operation.
