I have a 97 M5.2 F355 Spider and my AC compressor is dead. How easy/difficult is it to remove and replace? From the diagram, it looks pretty simple.

I know I need to have the R134A drained first. Then it looks like I can loosen the bolt that allows the compressor to swivel so that I can remove the belt. Then remove a few other bolts and it should drop right out.

Do you have your Fisher price tool kit or a real tool box? Kidding but I ask because well because it matters.

Do you have a shop that can recover your refrigerant? if its not empty? It could be a leak are you sure its the compressor that is your problem?

whats the symptoms of your problem no air no clicking on of the compressor what?

It will come out believe me Ferrari would be screwed if they had to remove the whole engine cradle to change out a compressor or a alternator. That's why they are where they are.

Loosen the lines going to the compressor first before you remove anything mounting the compressor to the engine. you can get the belt off but only loosen it as much as needed.

Remove 4, 7, 14, 17, 2x9, the belt and it drops down. Unplug the connector first.

When the compressor is turned on, the wire gets red hot and starts melting around the connector going into the compressor after which the hidden 30A fuse in the front compartment blows.

I just had my belt service done and discovered that the AC and fan were no longer working after I got the car back. I took it back in and the shop told me the compressor was bad and needed replaced.

When i did my first major i tried to take it off and no luck. I have a feeling a small torch is going to be involved. All the bolts were easy except one.

Would you remember which one by chance? If you do, I'll try that one first.

Yes it was number 4 i wanted to change the belt even though it looked brand new. This service i will change the belt, not looking forword to it though. I should have used an impact to break it loose but did not have one at the time.
Since engine was out it wa easy to get a wrench on and snipe it but i also did not want to break anything. It should have never been tightened that much.

It looks like I can get to 4 and 17 from the top with an impact wrench/breaker bar. Ignore my loose wire that melted out of the connector.

The new compressor from Ricambi arrived today. It says it takes 200cc of oil. I read about servicing the compressor and it talks about adding an amount of oil dependent on the amount of R134A added. Will the place that charges the AC system take care of this? Is it alright to drive with the new pump installed without adding the oil or R134A as long as the AC is switched off? Or do I need to install the new compressor at the same location that is going to charge it?

If you are going to let someone else charge it, then install it, drive it there with the AC off and they will fill it up with both oil and Freon.

The problem with the old compressor is just the clutch coil. You can easily get a new coil (Sanden SD7H15 compressor) for $30-50 and a new bearing (to change it whilst you are in there) at $10-20 (Ebay). They are easy to replace then you can keep the old compressor as spare.

So I called around and the answer is that they do not put the oil in, so I will need to do that myself. I also noticed that the oil fill hole will be on the side once the compressor is installed, so the oil will need to be put in before installing it.

One other thing I noticed is that bolt #17 in the drawing is not in the indicated hole in my photo. I wonder which one is incorrect.

It calls for PEG. I checked the new compressor and it was already filled.

I've managed to loosen all four bolts and remove the belt, so I'm making progress. These Fisher Price tools are working pretty well ;-)
Now I just need to remove the hoses.

BTW, for those who want to try this, you will need a 17mm crescent wrench, an 8mm Allen key, a 17mm socket, a 13mm socket (to adjust the tensioner bolt), and a short 1 inch extender to get to the bolt near the pully/belt.

Put in a new blower fan relay. They wear out, and cause the hidden fuse to get hot.

In the universe, that 30mm is a small wrench. It is not even a beast, but yes it is required for those 2 lines.

Yes, I've seen much larger ones, but it is easily the largest one I own.

I swapped out the A/C Dryer and had the system vacuumed at 25PSI for 10 minutes, then leak tested it and it passed. I had it filled with 28 oz. of R134a and now it is all working.
