Is it me or there are a lot of highly customized F12 TDFs out there compared to other limited editions Ferraris like the 458 Speciale Aperta or the 599 GTO? I wonder why that is?

According to my experience with Ferrari, in the 599 GTO and Scuderia era, ppl did not know or care much about customization. Alcantara plus loaded of carbon fiber was more than enough, Only some veterans knew how to build the cars to their own specs.

Then move onto Speciale generation, the coupe was ok, Ferrari went safe spec on the launch cars. On the Aperta, it was not easy to get an allocation plus the market started to treat cars as an investment, lots of things had changed plus the factory launch Aperta was kinda wild. I think it did help pushed lots of buyers to spec the cars differently.

In the TDF generation, we got more options and was almost impossible to get an allocation, and many more buyers knew that if they got a poverty spec car chances are worth less when reselling, plus lots of collectors tried much harder to customize it.

I think the current generation Pista and Pista Spider specs would go crazier than ever. We will have more wild cars and variety specs than Speciale generations. Of course, lots of close to launch spec cars as always but I would guess Pista Spider will get a lot more customized by the owners. Also, it seems the buyers' ages becoming younger and younger, resell red with black interior isn't always the #1 choice now.

That's very interesting. But for the LaFerrari or the LaFerrari Aperta, it would appear to me that the level of customization has been toned down a notch?

For example, I have never seen a LaFerrari with a daytona stripe or diamond stitching on the seats, or any crazy color combos with one-off customized stripes. So far, the F12 TDFs are the ones with the craziest builds in terms of exterior color/stripes combos and technicolor interiors!

I wonder why that is? F12 TDF = younger buyers and LaFerrari = older buyers? I would assume the people who got the LaFerrari allocations also have a TDF in their collection as well.

Not exactly goes that way with Enzo and LaF. The LaF looks like spaceship regardless of the color it's in, you don't need to try too hard to make it standout. Plus if you put more personality into these level of cars, it would not be safe in the resale market.

To many none-Ferrari ppl, they would never imagine the TDF is many times more than a 458 spider. But they would know LaF is the boss. I think that has a lot into it.

If you pay attention to the TDF market, actually the safe spec ones with lower selling prices moved much much quicker than the high price TM ones. I don't think we really need a definitive answer to your question. Ppl do it for different reasons.

Good point. I just find it interesting to see the level customization varies from each special model to the other.

I find the TM program at Ferrari to be much more flexible and extensive than the Exclusive program at Porsche.

I think the horizontal (cross the bonnet) stripe on the launch car set the tone for doing your own thing. It was an unusual paint detail, and I personally didn’t like it as it disrupts the natural airflow lines (to my eye). But it gave owners licence to do their own take on stripes (and paint, of course), and once you’re on that pathway, customisations start to roll on easily from there (I.e. bonnet stripes are your entry level drug!)

Agreed. In my search for nice TDF, I came across a lot of interesting (questionable) build. While I didn't want to buy a low spec cars, a lot of the high spec cars that I came across were just not to my taste. It took me a while, but I finally found one that was nicely done (to my taste) in a high spec.

I totally get it. I fell into the same slippery slope as well when I spec out my cars. Once you open the gate to customization, it's hard to hold back :)

I noticed as well an offer some potential explanations. The F12TdF was the first LE to practically carry the allocation requirements of a hyper car. So not actually being a hyper car required making the car more unique so it is more comfortable added to a hyper car collection. The other reasons are most were keepers, buyers had the means and it became fashionable to TM the car after a classic from a previous era. Once the first few custom specs became public it was almost a given that those on the list took inspiration from them searching for a more unique but tasteful spec.

I asked the same exact question about the 599 GTO a few years ago. That car was specced in a hell of a lot of weird liveries, wich was absolutely not common on Ferraris at the time

For unknown reasons, some Ferrari models seem to stimulate the creative side of their owners...

Why do you say that? You seem very negative towards the TDF for no good reason I can see. Yes, there were a few owner decisions that had questionable outcomes, but I think the vast majority look great even with such diverse choices in design and options.

Low mile 700k tdfs are wholesaling around 800 to 850. 600k tdfs are wholesaling at 900. Forget about if the cars have 3k miles or more.

Im not negative. Im just matter of fact. Throw in the 30k loss on required cali t and super hi spec tdf owners are flat after taxes. Just worth highlighting for anyone new to the game getting a pista and thinking its money in the bank with upside.

Puy another way - having to buy an ff for a laferrari is not the same as having to buy a cali t with pressure to overspend on a tdf spec, never mind having to buy anything for a pista.

Low spec TDFs have a higher wholesale price than a high spec TDF? I find that hard to believe unless the high spec TDF comes in a weird color combo (eg. Verde Opaco with orange stripes).

For the sake of argument, let's say both cars are in Rosso Corsa and both have stripes with the same miles. You are saying that the high spec TDF will sell for a lower price point than the lower spec TDF? In that case, I would always take the high spec TDF, in the same exterior color, over the lower spec ones then because the higher spec car has nicer leather, full carbon treatments, etc etc.

didn't you also recently mention you picked up a high MSRP car (682k window sticker) with slightly more miles (around 1200 miles) and you paid way below 967k? and that was from a private owner which wld be a retail price. i think that jives with what i stated.

so lets say you paid high 8s retail, what wld wholesale have been on your car? high 7s or low 8s.

    My unscientific opinion;

People who are in the "money" with previous purchases are playing with house money and don't mind loading up in options. Second type is trying to move up in line and does this by overloading on options.

My opinion is based on knowing certain TDF owners and what situation they were in or trying to get into.

Yes, but that is reflective of the TDF market as a whole. Put it this way, if there was another tdf in the same color/stripe combo but in a low msrp spec, then I will be paying EVEN LESS for that example.

Like I said earlier, unless the high spec cars are in a weird color combo, buyers like me would always put a premium on a high msrp car over a low spec car like for like. Having said that, the original owner would never recoup all of their $ on the special options they did (maybe 15 cents on the dollar), but it would help them differentiate their cars on the marketplace. Myself is a good case in point. I didn’t want to buy a low spec “boring” car, so I waited and waited until the right car to come up.

i know what wholesale is on my car - i can trade at wholesale right now. i'm in discussion with a few fchat people about selling the car direct so i will see where this lands, if anywhere. among the dozen people who reached out 4 were dealers masquerading as personal buyers which i expected to happen. I have been very transparent with fchat and my dealer that if i go the wholesale route i will only do so with my dealer. If no one here buys my car i will most likely consign my care to my dealer rather than trade at wholesale as i dont need the money asap.

thats because some them are just too individualized ...some are just to far out... I recall some of the 599GTOs were also to odd and the ones that sell best are nicely optioned standard colors ... .yours is a nice build and should sell as good as any
