My 2013 F12 had the Gearbox warning light come on. Only 13k miles. Sounds ominous. Anyone have experience? I know speed sensors are a weak spot.

If car has been sitting, it may be battery. Drive a few miles, then turn off and re-start. This usually clears it up

Honestly, see if your reverse gear button in the center is stuck.

I had the same issue, had the sticky button fixed, and never have had a gearbox error since.

Had a similar issue last year. 2014 F12, 13,000 miles. Maybe three different times. Seemed to happen after driving for 30 minutes or so and then encountering stop and go traffic. Car would not shift out of 1st gear and I would receive the message "Operation not admissible". Usually after turning off and then back on, it would clear itself and I could continue. Toward the end of last year, after not occurring for several months, the problem returned but this time I received a "clutch overheat" warning. Since I was due for my yearly service, I reported the issue. Luckily, they were able to duplicate the problem and said it was the gearbox revolution sensor. FNA covered everything under warranty.

Unfortunately, I had some bad news about the transmission. Brought it to the dealer and they ran the codes and consulted the factory rep. Apparently, some gearbox fluid has leaked into the clutch fluid. They share one rod and the seal separating them could have gone bad or something else had gotten stuck to trigger the warning lamp. Factory told them to try and replace the fluid and see if that would eliminate the problem. It did not fix the problem. They say the factory told them to replace the transmission. Tech said almost all the parts inside the DCT can be replaced, except this seal. So it needs a new tranny. Yikes!

I read that's pretty common issue with our DCT unit--trans fluid leaking into clutch fluid (or vice versa) and leaking out of weep hole. I believe there was a post here that described fixing this seal with seal p/n on this website. If you're under warranty, get the new trans. If you're out of warranty, it may be worth a look.

I don't think it was leaking out of the weep hole, at least I didn't see anything. It was leaking within the transmission. I am getting a new transmission and no it's not under warranty. They said I could drive it for a while in any event. But they did give me a very reasonable deal on it. I could choose to have them tear into it and change a bunch of stuff, but that still costs a lot of $$$ and really no guarantee it would fix everything. Maybe a dumb decision, but I don't really want to deal with trying to fix it and eventually getting a new one. I discussed it with a reputable independent and he basically agreed to get a new one or remanufactured one.

Lots of things can be ordered separately. Clutches, diff, SAP unit, speed sensor... all of these can be ordered separately and opening the gearbox and replacing them isn't such a difficult job if your mechanic is experienced enough.

May I ask how it went for you? I have a similar issue with my F12 now - apart from the fact that not the gearbox fluid leaked into the clutch, but the other way round. Car is in the workshop atm, the gearbox will be sent to a specialised company in Italy for a full rebuild.

After they diagnosed the problem, I did drive it around for a little bit and it definitely wasn't driving properly. I took it in right away. It eventually got a brand new transmission from Ferrari. They had one in the east coast. Took about 2-3 weeks total to get it done. I also had the option of having an independent take out the transmission and send it to Italy for rebuild and send it back. This would've saved maybe $5-7k. But still wasn't cheap by the time you got it there and back and installed. So the factory helped me with the cost and I chose to have the dealer replace it. Comes with Ferrari warranty. I think rebuild in Italy should be fine.

Thank you for the swift answer. I live in Europe (Austria) so, it is not a long way to Italy. I heard the company rebuilding it is called "VG Gearbox" and they sit next to Ferrari in Maranello. Costs will be around 10-12k Euros with shipping. Hopefully they can rebuild it and the gearbox has not suffered any mechanical damage - after the light came on, I drove the car for maybe a mile until I had it transported to the workshop on a truck. It is very frustrating as I never had any major mechanical issues with the car and now something like this happens. According to the workshop, a sealant between the clutch assembly (using around 8l of hydraulic oil) and the gearbox broke, pumping clutch oil into the gearbox, filling it up to the point that almost 6l of a mixture of clutch oil and gearbox oil escaped via the overflow of the gearbox onto my garage floor/the road. The main issue might be that the gearbox suffered mechanical damage from the mixture of different oils (with different specifications) - in the worst case I might need a new one costing around 30k. May I ask if you felt any diffrence with the new gearbox? I am thinking it might have been an upgraded one as I heard Ferrari/Getrag upgraded them with time (software and apparently some hardware items as well) and when you order a new one now, you get one of the latest...

My car was similar to yours. It has not had any problems at all. All of a sudden one day the gearbox lamp came on. Car was driving normal at that time. But soon thereafter, it wasn't driving well at all. Mine had just a little mixture of gearbox oil and clutch oil. Not really that much. Certainly not draining on my garage floor! They tried removing the oil and changing it. But it didn't work. It also cost me $30k for the entire job. The tech told me that I got an entirely new transmission. He can tell when they are rebuilt or brand new. I believe it has newer software and modified design to correct earlier problems. The car doesn't drive any different. The only thing with rebuilding it is could it happen again?? I suppose VG Gearbox would give you some warranty, but probably not labor if it needs work again. With the dealer, they warranty both parts and labor. Going the rebuild route from the US meant a lot of shipping cost and a lot of time. The car would be sitting around for 2 months while this whole thing was getting done. For those reasons I went with the new transmission from the dealer/factory.

That is totally understandable and I would have done the same in your case. I still have the risk of VG telling me the gearbox is damaged beyond repair or so much, that an economical repair is not feasible and I need a new one. With the rebuilt gearbox - yes, the risk of it happening again is there, especially as the case with the sealants will not be exchanged but instead "repaired", so I will be driving around with basically the same design faults, just refurbished. The thing is, however, that a new gearbox is somewhere north of 30k (EUR/USD - doesn't matter at the moment anyway with almost parity) with all associated costs and a rebuild will be somewhere around 10-12k (from previous experience of the official Ferrari dealer where my car is at at the moment). So I am thinking I can have it rebuilt three times before a new gearbox is amortized. Only if things go according to plan of course and no other "surprises" occur.
I think the reason why the oil actually left the car is that it went from the clutch into the gearbox (where there is an overflow) and not vice versa (like in your case) and that the clutch holds a staggering 8l of oil. I should say that I bought the car in 2018 with 8,800km on the clock (5,500 miles) and now it has 41,000km (almost 26k miles) on the clock. So I do drive it a lot - but only during summer and mostly on roadtrips around Europe. Mind you, the repair/rebuild option is only an option cause Italy is around 7hrs drive away from my place...

In your case with a rebuild around 10-12k, I would definitely try the rebuild. Good luck!

Is this covered under the extended power warranty?

Normally transmission issues are covered under the extended Ferrari "Power Warranty" but the dealer told me in my (our) case, it wouldn't have been covered as the warranty doesn't cover oil loss. Ferrari would have said the damage was caused by oil loss and not a mechanical failure per se, so they wouldn't cover it. It's what the dealer told me most probably would have happened. I didn't have the warranty either...

have you tried GTE - i thought they had a DCT rebuild fix. Also i thought the dealers had DCT fix down to an $8k job, no longer $30k like the old days when the cars were newer

One reason I chose not to buy the warranty when I purchased the car is when I read what is covered, it specifically states in almost every section that "leaks" are not covered at all. So I thought leaks are one of the most common problems especially with DCT, engine gaskets, etc etc. and they wouldn't be covered. So it wasn't that great a warranty.

I’m hearing this from my Indy that more and more DCT boxes are now suffering from internal seal failure as they age and that this part of the gearbox can’t be accessed or rebuilt because this section of the gearbox can’t be split without destroying it.

The only solution is a new one. And NP warranty won’t cover it because it comes under the seals and leaks exclusions.

Apparently the seal can be replaced but previously wasn't available as a separate part from the housing. In the thread below @nguyennhatquang shows the pictures from when he replaced his seal.

Thank you. I had seen the FF oil leak thread but assumed it wasn't the same seal. However, I think you're right and I've passed the details of the nguyennhatquang fix on to my Indy so hopefully I'll receive some feedback on whether it's the same seal or not.
