At my first-ever motor race, Watkins Glen 1975, I was saddled with a GAF 110-format camera that was an absolute piece of trash. It couldn't even take still photos without blur, and was hopeless for "action" shots. Here are a few passable shots; please excuse the bluriness and faded color. Pace's Brabham; Lauda taking his bag out of the back of a GT4; Rob Walker collecting data for his R&T race report; one of the mighty Ferrari flat-12s; Emmo still smiling after the race in spite of being balked by Regazzoni; the winning car with laurel wreath. So far we've had young Nico Rosberg and young Jacques Villeneuve. Here's young Michael Andretti, walking with his dad and the late Gunnar Nilsson from the garage to the pits at Watkins Glen in 1976. Image Unavailable, Please Login

Tribute to one other great genius: Colin Chapman, founder of Lotus, one ot the most gloryful F1 teams. Chapman always found these great sponsors, like John Player Special, and later Essex. Unfortunately, today Lotus is an automobile brand almost forgotten, trying to stay away from starvation, what a pity. Remember the gorgeous Esprit models of the 70's and 80's? Great times when drivers presented the brand's street cars, Italy's star Elio de Angelis for instance. Recognise that other star Ronnie Peterson near the Esprit? Lauda: "Whiff, whiff . . . who did that?" Montezemolo: "It wasn't me". Ferrari: "Ahhh . . that felt good. Say, why are you guys sitting way over there?"
I haven't thought of Gunnar Nilsson for ages. It's interesting that Mario formed such great friendships with his two Swedish teammates at Lotus, both tragically lost. Thanks for posting.

Speaking of Ronnie Peterson, he elected to drive his own car from the garage to the pits at Watkins Glen in 1976. Incidentally, the day before had been a monsoon all day. No one went out in the morning session; only Peterson dared try it in the afternoon, but he spun on his first lap, they towed him back in, and that was it for Saturday! Thankfully, race day was drier. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Here's a shot of James Hunt winning the 1976 race (if you look to the right you can spot the checkered flag) and another of the winning car back in the garage, by which time Hunt had turned over the driving duties to Mickey Mouse. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
