We still have 2 more weeks with no F1 action so I thought you guys would like to see this. Ralf..omg. It's rediculous.
Also I thought Heidfeld would be making more money.

Note: Salaries exclude bonus payments, personal sponsorships, endorsements and merchandising deals.

What in the HELL has Ralf done to deserve that salary? Besides being lucky enough to have some of the same DNA as Michael...?

I can remember when scale was even more lopsided. (?)
The ones at the bottom had to pay to play.
    How long ago was that?
Try last year, the only Hungarian driver lost his sponser and his home town came up with the money.
I also seem to remeber Piquet and Williams had an interesting arragement
Piquet drove for free. Williams paid him $100,000.00 per point.
He won the world championship in either 1986 or 1987 for Williams.

There have been others that paid through sponsers or out of a fat wallet.

Seems Niki Lauda paid to drive when he started F1.

Piquet also has a similar arrangement at benneton. They were paying him on a points scroed basis. They went back to a normal pay afterward because they couldn't afford to pay him like that, he scored too many points, lol

$1.5m for Coulthard? $2m for Villeneuve?
I'd rather pay them that much for not touching their cars.

I believe Coulthard also get $180K a point. I believe his new contract calls for $3mill plus $180K a point.

    I can't believe RS makes $25Mill.

The Minardi and Jordan drivers still are pay drivers. Their 'salary' is a token reward, as they have to bring millions in sponsorship. It's basically 'pocket money' taken out of the sponsorship they bring to the team.

As for what Ralf has done to deserve that salary? His last name is Schumacher. Toyota were willing to pay big $ (and Willi Weber would have demanded such) for the good publicity the name brings.

It looks like Renault is getting Alonso at bargain basement price.

If Alonso does win the WDC this year his salary will surely sky-rocket next year. I estimate $22M for next year.

toyota is insane to be paying ralf 1.16$ per point and that 25$ is the biggest bull**** ever....these point bonuses should be higher for the crappier teams not like BAR and Ferrari since you know they will always be in the top 8....

You're reading this incorrectly... these are estimated annual salaries with a figure derived from <est salary>/<points scored> included for interests sake. There's no "$x per point" payments mentioned in that list, it's just what the annual salary works out to be.

BlueBiturbo - you raise two points. First, yes his agent is amazing, his name is Willi Weber and he manages both Schumacher brothers. Secondly... by rights RS _should_ be paid more per point (although this is not a 'payment per point' list as I mention above), because each point is almost certainly going to be harder to come by in a Toyota than a Ferrari.

Edit - some of the names on this list are really very silly when you look at how they're ordered (in such a way that cost per point being most important is implied). Davidson, Liuzzi and PDLR aren't paid to score points, they're paid to be (primarily) test drivers. It just so happens that they've gotten to race a few times because the primary driver has been unable to or because of some musical chairs arrangement (Liuzzi).

BlueBiturbo, DC is a bargain at that price IMO - no, he's not going to bring home the WDC, but he's exactly what Red Bull needed - a driver with loads of experience and plenty of race wins, knowledge of how top teams operate, and a willingness to provide plenty of advice to his young teammates.

Actually that's incorrect. Some do get paid additionally for points scored. It's called a performance clause. I'm sure you've heard of that kind of thing. Speed TV a couple of weeks back was talking about DC signing his new contract and they made the distinction of salary and points bonus in addition to the salary.

I'll agree with you there. He's a bargain even at the new price.

Yes, you're correct, but that's not what these figures are - they're purely an estimate of the annual retainer. What I'm trying to say is that people are confusing the figures listed here for a payment per point, which they are not.

My Finnish buddy just told me he read in a Finnish paper over the weekend that McL has boosted Kimi's salary up some $7.5M to eclipse Ralf as the second highest paid driver. Anyone else read anything on this ?

Probably safe to say that he'll be the highest paid once MS reires and stay that way for his career. Question is who'll be signing the paycheck ? Bidding war on the horizon ?

MS made $80 million last year - a few hundred thousand less than Tiger Woods (highest paid sportsman).

He has never earned over $100 million a year. In fact no F1 driver ever has.
