F1 Clutch on an 03 360 - burning?

    Every now and then I get this burning rubber smell from the clutch (which I just replaced at 10K) - It doesn't seem to have any pattern (hill, no hill, fast start, slow start) is this normal?

    dont think its normal. it should only smell when u are in bumper to bumper traffic and u keep shifting from N-1-2 gears very often

    Based on your comments, (burning smell and clutch replacement at 10K) I suggest you make an appointment with the Ferrari service manager to assure you have an understanding of the F1 system. I would also take a test drive with the tech so he can evaluate your driving habits. Request that they check the PIS figure, (this can be adjusted with the later TCU as equipped in your car) for minimum slippage.

    It only happens from a start - in 1st gear - all the gear changes are fine. It did this before clutch replacement as it does it now. Probably once-twice a week (I drive it everyday).

    Obviously not normal and suggest you discuss this with the dealer.

    I wonder if they used the SD3 to reset the point of initial slippage for the clutch? Sounds like maybe it's off and frying the clutch.

    It seems that some dealers set the PIS at around 5.18 I have mine set at 4.12 and have very little slippage.

    this seems to be the biggest technical problem of 360.
    it is important to speak with your dealer to know well how to start
    and expecially how to climb up to the street from a garage in lower levels. if the clutch continues to press and leave....it has a more limited average life....

    Need to revive this thread.

    Today I was going under a tunnel at a near standstill in 2 nd (04, 360 F1) with a load of other ferraris behind me. I really gave it some gas and because it was so load I did not hear the clutch slipping. By the time we came out of the tunnel the engine bay was full of black smoke and that horrible, horrible burning clutch smell.

    Question is:

    Was the clutch slipping due to me being in 2nd and at a near standstill in sports mode and giving the gas some welly ? Is it a sign that I should go and have it looked at.

    The question is why you were still in 2nd gear if you were almost at a standstill.

    I know the car will not always change down to 1st while the wheels are still turning(even slowly) but if you anticipated using rapid acceleration it would seem a more logical choice to have selected 1st before giving it right foot.

    Take it into the dealer, or good indy, and have the PIS checked. If it's up above 5 (it most probably is) have them take it down to mid 4's.

    If you are in a manual then it is no probs and you do not get clutch burning. So F1 is different?

    F1 is definitely different.

    With a manual you can choose how to use the clutch, with the use of your left foot, (if you get my meaning), but with the F1 it's controlled electronically by how the software is setup.

    That is why I suggested, in the previous post, getting the PIS (Point of Initial Slippage) checked with the aid of the SD2 or SD3 (as the case may be) with the dealer.

    The cars are supplied from Italy with a "one size fits all" setting on the PIS, which can be as high as 5.6/5.7/5.8.

    Mine, as I have said on other threads, is down to about 4.6 and gives the clutch a much tighter/snappier take-off, compared to a very slippery/sliddey take-offs previously on both my previous and current 360.

    It is my belief that the PIS should be setup on an individual basis, depending on the clients driving style, at the time the car is being handed over to the customer, and is something that I will be requesting next time I change model.

    Now reverse is another story, since it never fully engages, and if you are prone to a lot of reverse usage that, in itself, will destroy your clutch in a very short time.
