Has anyone used Bring A Trailer (BaT) to buy or sell a car?
I want to use their auction service but would like feedback before I do.
Specifically, I'm looking for post-auction/transaction information.

Someone purchased an E-Type on BaT, from what I recall, there weren't any serious complaints.

I have a Jag XJS I'm trying to sell, but it's more a project...not really BaT material, so I'm shying away from it.

Bought a Porsche 997.1 Turbo from BAT out of Colorado, super easy and the car has been perfect. It was exactly as described in the ad and I still have it 3 years later. The seller was really cool too in that he was in SF for business and hand delivered the title, books, etc. before the car arrived on Intercity.

I took him for a ride in the F355 and he bought a yellow one 6 months later!

Sold my gated 360 Modena last month on BaT. Was actually a lot of fun.

The Buyer was great and we finalized the transaction without any drama.

Sold my Ultima GTR on BaT. They will push you to accept a lower reserve price than perhaps you'd otherwise prefer in order to maximize the likelihood of the auction ending successfully and BaT receiving their 5% buyer's premium.

That said, I had no trouble with the auction or the transaction itself.

How exactly is the transaction conducted? Through BaT or privately via Buyer/Seller? How were funds exchanged? And how as shipping/delivery arranged?

BaT are pressing hard to get me to agree to "no reserve" and to sign the listing agreement. But they've been very elusive in answering questions regarding post-auction and refuse to speak via phone.

Thanks for the feedback, it's more than I've gotten from BaT so far....

Let me recommend strongly against doing a no reserve. The seller is seldom the winner. (I am not referencing BaT on this... i am saying this in general)

It sounds like you are more concerned about having a mediator in between you your car and the funds.

Ill keep it simple for you.

Only accept a wire transfer to your bank account. Once you receive the money... sign your title put the buyers info in the buyers spot on the title and then You need to overnight the title signature required. Don't be cheap and mail it regular post. Overnight it, with a tracking number... and a signature. So you can follow up on everything. Also make the vehicle available for transportation.

I urge you not to accept cashiers check, and if you have to take a cashiers check only accept one from the bank they are financing it from.

Its cheaper to send a wire than to overnight a cashiers check and the VERY MOST SECURE FORM OF PAYMENT. PERIOD. FULL STOP.

So as long as you take these steps you will be just fine.

BaT is not involved in the sale process..... doesn't guarantee anything

I wondered the same thing. BaT doesn't do diddly squat once the auction is over except for collect their 5% from the Buyer and exchange contact info between Buyer and Seller. It's then up to those 2 individuals to consummate the deal any way they see fit. If the deal were to fall through for some reason, then I believe BaT will facilitate putting you in touch with the next bidder in line.

In my case, I took a bank check from the bank financing the purchase. The Buyer flew down and drove the car back.

I didn't have to go 'no reserve' but they did force a somewhat low reserve on me (it ended up going for 25% above their reserve). I'm not sure where they draw the line on 'no reserve' versus 'reserve'...probably a total $ value.

    Justin, Juan, Doug,

Thanks, that's just the info I was looking for.

It explains why there is nothing about post-sale on their website and why they won't answer questions about it.

It was obvious from the outset that they are solely focused on the sale going through (at any price). They are simply a listing service that collects the majority of their fee from the buyer. I'm OK with that, I just wish they'd have been a little more up front about it.

Juan, to answer your question, I'm selling a 1995 Jag XJ6, a 1989 Jag XJS convertible, and a 1996 Ducati 916. Want to fund a new toy....

BaT is good for certain types of rides.... don't see those jags delivering a bidding war but the duck might

To be fair, they do a little bit more than just list your car. For one, they write all of the Ad copy based on the facts and bullet points you give them. They also monitor the auction, intervene with updates to the listing, etc. Perhaps the biggest benefit is the very knowledgeable community (of observers/commenters) and savvy buyers. If you play your cards right (stay positive, don't hide anything negative), the former will help you sell the car.

And oh yeah, in 7 days you are going to turn the metal into cash...instead of humoring tire kickers and time wasters all summer long.

The folks at BAT are very knowledgeable about their market, buyers and sellers, and also the amazing variety of cars offered, they know their stuff. I think they are doing an outstanding job overall. I sold my 930 successfully this past winter on BAT, and I just attempted to sell a Fiat 850 and it fizzled...had more to do with people's lack of appreciation for the car than anything BAT related.
