I was wondering if anybody has any good tricks or techniques for easily removing/replacing the exhaust "donuts" (gaskets) that are used to connect flanged exhaust components together? Mine are the old style and essentially “weld” themselves over time to the flanges. Removing a pipe often destroys one of the “donut” surfaces preventing reuse. In the past I have resorted to penetrant, drilling, chisels and dremel grinding. A long process. The newer style donuts dont do this fortunately so Im gradually replacing the old style.

I almost never reuse them unless everything is going right back together. They are "crush to fit" and don't reseal to new surfaces very well.

An assortment of small sharp chisels and picks will make short work of getting them off.

I dont reuse either. However the two in question are at the ends of the exhaust headers and, lacking a lift, are not that easy to chisel on although it may come to that.

I just pryed gently but with some force and mine just came right off.

Just use a little patience, no chiselin' necessary.

I used a screwdriver and dental pick to dig the bits out. Lots of patience and a few cuss words to boot!

I took the best one I could salvage to the local auto parts store and they matched up some from a more common vehicle for next to nothing. I ordered all new from Ricambi but they were the wrong ones, I still have them unused, they're yours for the shipping cost if you can use them, which year is yours? Or if you've already purchased, they're here for anyone who can use them. It would cost ME to send them back to Daniel, hardly worth it. I DID get all new nuts and bolts from him though and they made the re-assembly so much sweeter. Ciao

+1 Good advise! I'd only add that, like you, I soaked mine with penetrating oil for a day or so before I attacked them. I just did this in the last month before sending headers off for jet-hot. I was so elated when one of them pried off intact!!!

I was amazed at how these things were fused to the exhaust pieces!!!

I know that this is an old post, but I hate those #$@^@! exhaust donuts! A 20 minute job turns into a multi-hour ordeal because the old style donuts fuse themselves to the pipes!

I just "removed" a leaking one from my Mondial. Now I'm trying to remove the leftovers stuck in the grooves of the pipes. I going to try the penetrating spray, dremel, wire brush. I'm considering dropping the entire exhaust and replacing them all. What a pain!

To make matters worse, the weather is gorgeous and I want to drive my car!

Sometimes they do come off fairly easily, other times a chisel is the only way. It's good to try and chisel them in a rotational direction around the pipe first...if you can get them to spin on the pipe...they come off a bit easier than just trying force them off perpendicular to the pipe.
