Anybody ever driven down there to pick up Stone Crabs? I heard this is the place to go but information was limited, it was a couple years old. Internet search was limited as well, this area seems to be sort of rural. I want to head down next week and get a few pounds, any info would be appreciated.

    Duane -

Fred and some others did a drive down there recently, I'm sure they'll pipe in about the trip; a great opportunity will be February 7-9 for the Everglades City Seafood Festival --> http://www.evergladesseafoodfestival.com/

I went about 6 or 7 years ago; never thought I'd get tired of eating stone crabs, but I did that trip! :)

    Duane,

As Griff mentioned, a few of us just went down there several weeks ago. It was a very rural drive, but very nice to get out of the city and into the relaxing scenery of the Everglades. It was really a great day!!!

You can either go I-75 accross then south to Everglades City, or on Tamiami (which is what we took). Once into Everglades City, you're right, it's VERY rural. However, there are many stone crab places to pick from, since that is where most of the stone crabs are harvested.

We went to Triad Seafood. It's a quaint little place where the owners welcome you, the view is nice, the service is fantastic, the stone crabs are delicious, and don't forget the home made key lime pie!!!

When are you planning on driving down there???? I'd like to go back again for lunch one day during the weekend. I'm sure there are others who would also join us.

Fred I was thinking Tuesday. We want to share some Stone Crabs with the family on Christmas Eve, we usually have a pretty big crowd, and it would be a nice treat.

Triad is by far the best place to buy them. City Seafood is nasty and tends to be very overpriced. Take the Alley west to Hwy 29 and go south. Stay south through the Tamiami Trail intersection, cross the Barron River and turn right just past the first RV resort. That road runs down the east side of the Barron River. Once you see the river on your right, look for the school on your left. Triad is on the river and across the street from the school. Their sauce isn't too shabby either. This time of year, he may have fresh Pompano as well.

have not been there for a few years but have been there many times - go to Hamiltons on Chucko(will not attemp to spell) the island. The crab boats come in the afternoon and unload. They cook them immediately and you can buy them right off the sorting table - spend the money and get jumbos - Joes Stone Crab from Miami is there every day getting crabs for that night and they(or did) bring over key lime pies - pick up one of those.
If you need help cracking the crabs - email me and i will give you instructions - you can really mess up cracking - good luck

My buddy Captain Mike from Florida Sport Fishing Magazine brought me a professional cracker today, kind of an industrial nutcracker.

Everybody recommends Triad so I will probably go there. I am definitely picking up a Key Lime Pie and I hope some good smoked fish dip. Sounds like a YUMMY Christmas Eve dinner.

Thanks for all the input guys!

The cracker works great - I live in the Keys and we entertain a lot and the cracker is a little slow if you have to crack a lot - which I do - had the Ferrari Club at my house last February and had to crack 65 lbs

A little birdie told me I'll be watching the kids as she completes her holiday shopping this weekend. Trust me, I'd LOVE to go but I know I can't. Guess you can say I am working too!

Tom, miss it a ton. I use to make that drive twice a month as I enjoyed fishing south of Chokoloskee. During Stone Crab season, my bride made it clear I wasn't welcome home unless I stopped by Triad first. I hope you're well and that we will see you at Cavallino this year.

We had a group of 15 cars out of Naples that took "A Long Ride to Lunch" in Everglades City. The little town is like a trip back in time. We had reservations but showed up a bit early since our speeds hit 160......yikes!! Great seafood can be found at many venues in EC.

Took a little day trip down, and loved it! I think I am going to take the family down for a day trip and to maybe go on an airboat ride. Picked up about 10lbs of claws, we ate most of them last night and will polish the rest off today when the rest of the crew arrives.
