Incorrect use of the apostrophe has always been a pet peeve of mine, and I hope I'm not wrong here. "Ferrari" is considered a proper noun, that should only be pluralized by simply adding an "s", and acronyms are made plural by adding an "'s". All other uses show possession...at least that is the way I understand it. I've notice that lately, people have been using "Ferrari's" as a plural, and according to Chrome's automatic spellcheck, this is also the correct pluralization....my world is crumbling around me, can anyone explain this to me?

    Chrome is wrong.

Multiple Ferrari cars = Ferraris. "The Ferraris are on the backroads today."

Something that belongs to a Ferrari car = Ferrari's. "The Ferrari's clutch went up in smoke on the backroads."

edit: I actually have a Journalism degree :)

Ferrari's is correct when you're referring to an individual (plural). E.g. "Enzo Ferrari's chopped Chevy".

Ferraris is correct when you're referring to more than one Fcar. E.g. "My garage will not be complete until it is filled with 10 Ferraris".

The Ferrari's wheel was identical to the ones on the other five Ferraris.

You wouldn't believe the rash of s#^t I received on this site for making the same complaint a few years ago. Some really hostile comments. I was surprised that so many people, successful enough in life/business to afford Ferraris, keep making this basic punctuation error. Agup...I'll never forget your post.

What about the constant "advice" and "advise" misuse? Lol.

So I'm not going crazy, and I AM right feeling like a mental superior when I see a professional outfit pluralizing Ferrari with and apostrophe! Hallelujah!

I've illustrated the differences with the phrase, "I advise you to heed the mechanic's advice."
What is so hard to remember "advise" is a verb and "advice" is a noun?

Ferrari's not going to disagree with you on that!

(just had to throw another proper apostropheed version in there) :D

Feral Apostrophes have always annoyed me, but I'm down to only a slight wince every time I see one now.

I was offered a promotion at my old job. Due to prior experiences with the company, I asked the VP to give it to me in writing. He gave it to me, and I was appalled at the amount of misspellings, grammatical errors, and just plain nonsense in the offer. It looked like an 8 year old wrote it.

Okay, English (and journalism) majors, what is the one thing every paragraph must have to be a paragraph?

Can you say a topic sentence? I used to tell grad students in accounting the best way to write a paper was to just write the topic sentence of each paragraph. They could then go back and add a couple of filler sentences and be done.

All I got were blank stares.

The other problem was my method would require them to think about what they were going to write before writing.

How about the dreaded Topic Sentence? This in turn implies more than 1 sentence.

I see one sentence paragraphs in journalism all the time.

    Am I close?

Too late by 3 minutes and this is NOT another paragraph!

It's common in many places - and a little disturbing, as these are well educated successful individuals. It's not only Ferraris vs. Ferrari's. Look at simple combinations and words like "a lot", "their", "you're" and what not. "a lot" will be either "alot" or "allot", "their" will be "there", and many write "your" when "you're" is needed. And don't even get me started on who vs. whom...

Just think back through schooling, especially college. If you were to stereotype each group.

A's - had to be near 100% dedicated to academics nose in the books. limited extracurricular activities, no athletics, maybe no work, and certainly no partying. Many 'A' students are also pretty dumb when it comes to the real world (think along lines of doctors). They are obviously very intelligent and "book" smart. Maybe not so much they are born dumb for real world stuff, but their dedication to profession and time required leaves very little else on the table. Besides going the doctor route these type of people make good professors (how many professors have you known that functioned great in the real world?).

C's - the C students out there were smart enough to pass the classes, many with very little effort not going to class, but able to cram last minute getting a B on final to bring semester grade up to above C. these weren't drop outs or losers, they could pass all their classes while participating in sports, extracurricular activities, having a job, partying, and ****ing their ass off. These are multifaceted 'smart enough' people who built up the social interaction skills necessary in business. they are also the 'risk takers' that often start businesses or go off on their own.

B's - the B students could be A capable students that could also handle acting like a C student, these are the type that go to Wall Street smart as a whip with social desires and skills too. now there are the C students that have to study like A students to maybe move up to the B level. What do they end up doing? they can be hard workers and still be successful working for others middle management etc.

FYI no one take offense, this is assuming, stereotyping, and generalizing which you know just results in a big pile of ****. This explains a little more behind the 'B' students work for the 'C' students and 'A' students teach.
