    pictures would help

Knowing nothing about your car I would say ( if you havent) :

Do a leak down test and if it passes change the exhaust valves
    Rebuild the water pump
    Replace the timing chain
    Reseal the engine completely
Replace the torque converter seal if its an automatic
Look inside the oil separator for piles of rust
    Service the distributor

Definitely check how much of the chain adjusting bolt is visible. But the above list (Newman) is good. How about getting the headers ceramic coated also? Maybe one of the high torque geared starters.

    While the motor is out:

    1/ rust-proof the engine bay:
If you remove the radiator, you can access the part of the body that's under the cavalino, and surrounding the turn signals. You will notice that the factory has made huge paint savings here, mine was almost bare metal, that's a difficult part to access with a spray gun, so check that this is done properly. Next to the exhaust(s), behind the fender, the frame is collecting dirt, and water is trapped.

2/ You can replace all the electric connectors, as these are now close to 40 years old.

Most of these are made by TE connectivity:
wipers motor, kjet, Dinoplex are 6 pin connectors (one black all the 3 others are white)
air conditioning fan is a 2 pin "T plug" connector
motors for the headlight lamp are using two black 4 pin connectors
approx. three 2 pin (regular not T plug)

Here is the ref to the 6 pin one, the others are in the same category on digiket, as said these can be either black or white:
    https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/te-connectivity-amp-connectors/180906/A138949-ND/1153010

Then you've got some lucas bullet connector for the Lucas Fan(s), I would replace these with 4mm bullet connectors or the above mentioned "T plug"

Finally you can replace the ground wires (turn signal light, fan, headlight, fan switch, starter)

3/ Air conditioning hose: these are hard to remove even when the engine is out so maybe you could take this opportunity to replace them?

4/ replace the torque converter if it is still the stock one. Quoting John Kilgore: "the stock converter is the worst possible one any current converter would be better". The 412 (and maybe 400i gen2?) had a better converter, but gen1 is fitted with a converter that spoils all the fun of this car.

If the timing chain is being changed, it is a good idea to look inside the timing chain assembly for damaged items: broken sprocket teeth, torn pads. Also inspect the timing chain axle support, can have cracks.
