Which is the best engine oil? Now using Shell helix ultra 5w-40. Endorse by ferrari. Is it a must to use shell engine oil? Possible for other brands to destroy oil seal etc?
You will get as many answers as there are oil companies Some like Redline, some like Mobil 1 , some like moto .. your pick I chose Mobil 1 for all my cars .. wrong / right don't know but easy to get, inexpensive, and seems to be around for ages
Other brands will not damage oil seals. There are many good oils available. Just use the correct weight for your areas temperature and use a synthetic oil. 0W-40 or 5W-40 are good all locations oil, except for maybe Alaska in the winter. Also, look at the API oil rating on the bottle. Shell oil is endorsed by Ferrari because of some kind of kickbacks, not because it is any better than any other quality oil. ferrari dealerships all use diffrent oils,my local uses totalbrand i bring redline for them to use 5/40.
I use Joe Gibbs Driven Racing oil DI40 and send off to Blackstone for analysis. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat.com mobile app
Where is locally? I get Walmart.com to deliver 10 quarts ( two 5 quart jugs) of Mobil 1, 5w-40 to my door for $60. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
I have more track miles in a regular 458 than probably anyone else on here and I EXCLUSIVELY run Royal Purple. There is no better engine oil on the market. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
This topic will give you as many dogmatic answers as there are oil companies squared. AS has been said, there is no one best oil. They are all good, API of SN on rating, 5-40 synthetic, 10 quarts in two 5 quart jugs. Pennzoil ultra premium foamed a lot for me so i have been using Valvoline European formula 5-40 ($29.00/jug at Walmart) and it is fine. Normal temps, no metal ,good analyses, no foam. Your call. You can find as many oil analyses/opinions on You Tube ad nauseam as you want and perhaps get more information and research, but in the long run all major oils are fine IMHO.
Maybe, maybe not on the track miles (though I no longer track the Spider), and maybe-maybe not on the oil. Red Line synthetic oil has a moly content of 950 ppm. Moly is a great additive if you're running hard. I run it in the 458 Challenge now.
Mobil 1 specs for different formulas but the one to use is the 0w 40 FS euro formula Image Unavailable, Please Login Sent from my moto g power using Tapatalk
Penzoil Ultra Platinum consistently comes out on top in many oil comparisons, Amsoil is also very good. If you change the oil regularly, probably doesn’t matter much with any of the top brands.
I use Pennzoil Platinum Racing. It's way overkill for my application but now "Recommended by Ferrari"

when I had the 458, I used Liqui moly 10w60 (recommended by my Indy guy) kept the engine nice and cool, and also great performance, wasn't tracking it regularly but was very good for daily driving.
Something like that sounds real cool, and that is, as long as you can get it, curious about the cost too only because there doesn't seem to be a limit as to what they can charge, you know....sort of like a craft beer too, ha ha. My Speciale calls for 10W60 and I am trying to figure out what to keep in it other than the Shell that is recommended, and to which I might use
Just looked it up for a moment, oh its very inexpensive so to speak. As long as you can get it year after year, sounds pretty good. To say, I haven't changed my oil yet, so far the dealer has with the Shell 10W-60 so I am thinking that it is probably the best choice because the enigne has been run with it. I don't like mixing oil changes from one to another so I guess I'll figure it out when it is time.
thats great the dealer is putting the 10W-60 Shell stick with that for sure -so they use different oils for Speciale that's super good to know i understand they use 5W-40, on the regular models ... Yes it's a good option to have when the time comes, my time had come with my 458 so this oil was really good
Yes my understanding too is the 5W-40. I am thinking in my case, that much like the Antifreeze from Shell that is no longer available is that one day the Shell oil too won't be available.....argh......I have always been a fan of Castrol and if I am going to change, as long as I can get that 10W -60 that is might be my chance to do it. I think that the Castrol will be around where I am not so sure about the Shell products. In your, case you've made the move and long live with that move. Engines and other things in my view are happy with using the same lubricants over and over.
