If I rev up and take foot off gas, its sounds almost as if there's a bird chirping.

Its almost like random intermittent chirps after a high rev. Dont hear it in idle, and not really in throttle as well, only rev down.

yikes. No its almost like a tiny few chirps after acceleration. Bad mystery engine sound is quite bad. Mine isnt similar to this. I'm going to try and and post something shortly.

Stethoscope is your best friend in this case perhaps.

The chirping kind of matches with the burbles that the engine/exhaust makes when you come off a rev.

    Intake whistle/chirp maybe?

There is definitely a whistle on the intake. Thats a distinct sound. This is more of a scattered random chiping on rev-down. Almost in the same random pattern as the bubbling burble of the engine on rev-down. I read somewhere on here that loose metal inside the exhaust (sign of age) can be the culprit.

Here it is. I have 2 clips.

One that highlights the expected induction whistle. The second highlights the chirp after a high rev. If you listen closely the chirp matches the exhaust burble (making me think its the exhaust being old). Seems like this is common with stock exhaust pipes that have aged from some of posts ive read.

Longshot guess from a relative novice, but perhaps a butterfly valve in a carb sticking open? Wouldn't sound unusual when its wide open, but might chirp air if trying unsuccessfully to fully close?

Does the car lurch or have any issues smoothly slowing when you take your foot off the pedal? Just thinking about sticking throttle pedal cable.

Disclaimer: I probably don't crack the top 50 technical experts on the 308 board, so don't take my advice until someone regarded here as an expert also weighs in.

Its injected so no carb. Occasionally carpet gets stuck under accelerator but causing chirp. Listen to my parked revs in second file.

A-ha!!! EXACTLY! Your injected car is missing carburetors.

    Case solved!

(Precisely why I mentioned you should take my mechanics advice with a grain of salt).

Sounds like your exhaust is falling apart.

Two common things to check are the exhaust heat shield which cracks and then (less likely) the cam belt covers which sometimes loosen altho this noise tends to be a little deeper

Listening to the second MP3 file, I think the noise is happening as you increase the revs as well. Sounds like a bearing noise to me - maybe the alternator or water pump? That's where I'd look first.

Thats interesting. I feel like i hear it after the rev, when RPMs are on way down and engine is burbling/bubbling. Feel like the chirps fit in with that which makes me think its exhaust since burble is probably excess fuel burning off in exhaust.

Obviously exhaust would be best outcome... but will keep bearings in mind..

Exhaust leak. My 83 makes a chirp too. But it's from the alternator belt and only happens for 10 seconds on start up.

I had that too on my belt but a quick shot of belt dressing cured that

Gotta try some. Did belt service a month ago. Suspect I got some grease on it on the process.

Hi Bell Bloke here, you know the poor sod with the 'Bad Engine Noise''
Well belts sound like that and so do bearings sometimes, even a leaking exhaust valve, but my money is on a cracked manifold firstly or exhaust system second.
You may have to let it get worse before you find it...
