Does anyone keep an emergency Jump start battery in their boot just in case? I was thinking about maybe installing a small one for emergency jump starts if I am in a place that I am unable to use a battery tender. Maybe have it recharge when the car is running. Any thoughts?

I do. Ridiculous actually. My car (Porto 2020) has killed three batteries so far . Everytime I had to call Ferrari as nothing would happen and all the lights just stayed on, so just in case, I carry a starter with me. Fortunately have not had to use it in the last 8 months, so maybe this (fourth!!!) battery is OK.

I've had better luck than most with my 2014 458 Spider (just replaced the eight year old factory battery), but I carry either https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07C5PMXXZ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 or https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0924V8SPC/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1 in each of my cars. The BeatIt jump started our Maserati Gran Turismo Convertible about eight times without having to recharge, before I was able to get the car battery replaced. When my 458 started having problems the BeatIt still showed about 50% charge even though I had left it in the trunk for over a year. I also had the fun of seeing someone stranded with a dead battery and pulled over in my 458 to get his car started with one of my jump kits. They are small, lightweight, can charge your phone and require very little maintenance.

My 2019 Portofino has 11,000miles on the original FIAMM agm with no issues. When the time comes that you have to pay for a new battery, look at Braille's i48CS lithium (about $2500) and B7548 agm (about $360).

I have this one and it work fine since several years with Ferrari Cali T, Mercedes E, and a lot of friend's cars and vans with dead battery.
Peak current is not enough to spec a good jump start battery.
you need to know start current in the technical specifications
    Ex this one with:
    500 A for 3 secondes,
    400 A for 5 secondes

Excuse my ignorance on this but I was always under the impression that it was a big no no to conventionally jump start my 2010 Cali….is that not true?

Its always better to charge slowly, but that is not always available. Jump starting is fine as long as you follow the procedures in the manual.

Thank you, I guess it’s time to get more familiar with that section of the manual just in case. Anything specific I should be pointed to?

These cars are super sensitive to voltage. If your voltage is low on start up you will get a slew of different warnings and errors. It is not always available to leave the car on a battery tender if you are away from home. I suspect that after 3 years most OEM batteries are done on these cars and need replacement.

I'm actually nervous about a lithium battery in the engine bay. You always hear of these batteries catching on fire if there are voltage surges and such, and I'm not sure I trust the Ferrari electrical schematics given how glitchy these cars are with voltage. I know they are designed to be in cars, but I would want a few more years of history before making that kind of jump in my beloved Cali T

The Owner's Manual for my 2019 USA Portofino says DO NOT JUMP START THE VEHICLE (in red print),but other owners in other countries have reported differently. What does your manual say?

Always? Where did you hear that? Never heard of it and I have one in the Lusso and one in the GT4.

There has not been such issues with Antigravity batteries, or Braille for that matter. Antigravity has a built in voltage regulator to prevent exactly this. The system in the battery is exactly what makes them work in cars as this is what they were designed for.

Sure there is hearsay out there, and somekne always knows someone's friend who has an uncle who are married to someone who has a brother who's third cousin heard from a "reliable source" that a lithium starter battery caught on fire, and burned down an underground parking garage and the childrens hospital on top of it.

Fires are not common and these batteries are very safe. Aside from the entire protective system, there is also another factor. The Antigravity batteries are using Li-Fe cells, not Li-Ion and not Li-Po cells. This matters because an overcharged Li-Fe cell will not catch on fire like the others, and it will not catch on fire if ruptured. This may force the question of why they are not used in EV cars. The answer is simple. Power density is less and they are more expensive to make. A single cell Li-Fe rests at 3.3 volts and peaks at 3.6 volts whereas a Li-Ion rests at 3.6 volts and peaks at 3.9 volts. A Li-Po cell by comparison rests at 3.7 volts and peaks at 4.2 volts.

I know, I digress but just trying to create a bit of context.

I have a degree in electrical engineering, however, there is plenty of documentation that if a lithium ion battery experiences a spike or physical damage, there is potential of fire. I am not saying that those particular batteries brands have issues since I have no information on that. I am just concerned generally given the harsh environment of an engine compartment. We have all heard of fires in samsung phones, in Tesla cars, boeing planes. So I just have a concern, which in my mind overshadows the lightness of those batteries and their high cost. If I were racing the car that equation might be altered, but mine is simply a GT car for long enjoyable drives. Dependency and piece of mind are my primary concern.

This subject was also debated last year, and I believe that it was shown that later versions of the US manual also did not have the paragraph about not using a jumper. I don't have my Euro manual anymore, but there was guidelines about how to jump the car, not stating it should not be done. Now what I say next is not a jab at the US, just thoughts. Could it be the case, that US manuals had that paragraph because Ferrari was trying to take preventive measures against getting sued by some clown damaging his car while trying to jump start it in all the wrong ways? Seeing that it is only there in the US manuals, it does have a bit of a "Do not dry your Poodle in the tumbler!" vibe going on.

Okay....so your reasoning is that lawsuits only take place in the USA? Or that only dumb people inhabit the USA and nowhere else?

If you said the reason was for Ferrari dealers to make a little extra scratch I could go with that one....

I don't have a Portofino, but I do have a US manual. Page 175 details the correct way to jump start the car:

I have always assumed that "do not jump start" means do not jump start using another car, but using a jump kit should be ok.

I liked the one that was posted in the second post because it is a phone charger and I think it can sit in the armrest. But unfortunately it is unavailable. I was searching last night and quite a few are unavailable right now. Maybe has something to do with Supply chain issues.

Saw that also when I tried to look into it, lots of alternatives but hard to just pick a random one. Also liked this one because it was so small...
