That's cool. I'm not a collector of anything like this but the workmanship looks fabulous.

Do you know the story behind why your family member was awarded this?

Yes I do. It is a piece of history.

I also have a similar medal from Germany. I will put it up for sale.

The other medals, from France, like the Legion of honor and the Croix de Guerre with (2) palms in 1940, I will keep them for his grand children.

He wrote his memoir (3 volumes) so there would be plenty to tell, but to get them we had to swear to wait 25 years after his death to publish any of it. We still have some more years.

Here is a picture (taken from one of the volumes, hence the low quality and high distortion) of him, first of the left, with Gen. de Gaulle, second and the Shah, fourth, in late 1963.

    Hi Tarek,

I collect medals and Orders - this is very nice. I focus on Napoleonic France and Whilemine Germany - Prussia. I have some Victorian British Medals as well. I do have one Order of Osmani from Turkey - Ottoman Empire that was awarded to my great, great grandfather in Albania ... sadly it's in terrible condition with much of the cloisonne chipped and scared. the neck badge is partially bent as well... but nevertheless, it's a family heirloom.

I also have some Nazi-era German medals that were given to my father by a veteran coming back from the war. back then they were a dime a dozen and people did not think that they were in bad taste to collect... today - I don't show them at all.

The handguns from this era are inspiring to look at. The hi-quality materials were often milled and expensive to produce. Today, most of the components are plastic and stamped - cheap.

Imagine von Kluck's flank descending from Belgium was at full strength and they did not pull elements to reinforce the Crown Prince, at the Battle of the Frontiers.

Yes the dive to the sea should have continued as the abrupt turn slowed the Germans down and allowed the brits and Belgians to counter attack

As mentioned earlier I also have a mid-70's Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany "Knight Commander's Cross" class comprised of the Star and the Badge suspended on neck riband in their presentation case.

    SOLD

The Egyptian Order of Merit sold for near the asking price to the son of the gentleman who owned the medal manufacture!

    That's a heart warming story.
