Just came across an 82 GTSi claiming to Possibly be a Magnum PI car, also listed as a QV. (No engine pics.) Tried to post a link but apparently I'm not smart enough. Thought you guys might like to discuss this machine!

Interesting, yet no definitive answer. I do know that all the cars used in the series were supplied by Steve Harris imports in Salt Lake City Utah, maybe they could shed some light on the chassis number..

So does that make the car somehow more valuable.....not to me.

Come to think of it Mr. Harris (JR.)actually was kind enough to post all the Vin's of the cars used throughout the show's entirety this was about six years ago. They were listed in another Magnum PI thread..

I for one was calling BS to the entire ad, it surely isn't a QV and I would've bet it wasn't a magnum car either, kind of surprised to see this twist..

I don't know, guess it would be kind of cool to own a Magnum car but I wouldn't pay an extra $20,000 for that little bit of coolness LOL

Well, first of all it isn't a QV

But besides that, this isn't the first time that exact ad has been on ebay. Same discription several years ago and all he says is he was told yada, yada yada...

So, nope. Not a magnum car. sorry

I have owned several cars that at one time or another had royalty or the famous in the seat.
I never felt that would add to the value. What vintage Ferrari has not had famous ownership?

I would think that car in the opening scenes would bring a bit higher price among some of us here.

Problem is, no one will ever really know that chassis number. I mean we have narrowed it down to one or two but who knows?

I was watching a couple of episodes from the first season earlier this summer and unless someone decided to change radios, they had a couple different carbed cars back when they first started shooting the show. I mean, we all know they had several different cars when they used the 2Vi and QV's - but that was later in the series when the money was rolling in and they were a big success. I just assumed that for the first season, they had one. Why bother with more? Show may flop, money would have been tighter, the usual. We know how one was driven across the country to begin the shoot, etc.

I started to post some picks of the differences. I may still later this week or weekend.

Last time I was involved in a discussion about the Magnum's cars was a year ago; I proposed a list of the chassis numbers for which I thought we could "reasonably" assume that they were indeed "Magnum's cars". Dr Tommy chimed in also.

    See posts 12 & 13 here:

    http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/308-328/430369-magnum-pi.html

That leaves us for the time being with nine chassis numbers for which the probability seems "about confirmed":

    28251
    28525
    29109
    34567
    38527
    45579
    45607
    51941
    57685

We are certainly missing a few others still; should anyone have a chassis number with a "strong probability" to propose, please feel free to add it to the list, in a common effort to increase our knowledge.

Unless there is documented paperwork that verifies the car was use on the set, claiming the car is a Magnum PI car is nothing more than that - a claim. Anybody can claim anything; proving it is quite another issue. ;)

Unless the folks producing or otherwise in charge of the cars on the set included a signed statement that chassis xxx was used in Magnup PI, you have nothing but "it COULD have been used on Magnum PI" That, IMO, is not worth paying a dime over the car's "normal" price. Hey, I watch Pawn Stars, I know how this stuff works re provenance! :)

Yep, documentation of some sort of another is paramount.

While we are on the subject has anyone properly identified the 328 they used?? I remember a discussion where they used one for some interior shots which are a dead giveaway for us now.

    What chassis might that be??

I'm sure it was mine! Maybe when I sell it I'll make that claim!

    Oops..being a 1989 model might be a problem...

Naah, no problem at all. I'll just claim it was a prototype '89, produced by Ferrari in early '88 and supplied directly to the show for the interior shots, then returned to the factory for final work/production as an '89. YEAH, that's it! I can see big bucks rolling on for such a unique 328! I'll make up a certificate on my printer and sign it Enso Ferrari! :)

It was one very very brief shot. You cannot even tell that Selleck or the girl were even the ones in the car. The rest of the scene they were "back in" the QV.

    It was a 328, though.

What I do know is that 58267 was a "Magnum" car...
Agreed, 58267 is a Testarossa; but as her owner was Tom Selleck, so it is a "Magnum" car.

    I didn't know he owned a TR.

I thought he was a Porsche 928 guy. I know he LOVED them

Here's proof. A picture is worth a thousand words.

Nice Euro QV too. Anyone claim it?

    Well,

Woke up early this morning and had a look at the forum; "Ellentinos" was asking about the earliest 328 GTS produced (in the "328 production numbers thread"), so I checked all the lists I have, including of course Matthias Urban's book.
The first 328 GTS is 58687, so by checking and browsing through the 58000 to 59000 range of chassis's numbers in Matthias' book, I found this entry for Testarossa 58267: "ex Tom Selleck"...I took notice to post it here.

    How about that!

I would have NEVER thought he would go for a Testarossa.

I knew Larry M liked the 308's. He kept a few from the show for himself and had a black Mondial (conv? - I don't recall) and I knew Selleck loved the 928 so much he bought each his costars one.

But I never knew the TR thing.

If you ask me, he put Ferrari in "some favourable light" at he time...they could even have given him a free new car every five year until him not being fit enough to drive, for that matter. After all, the 308 is the car that saved Ferrari, and he/the show had a part in that.
