I did an oil change with 8 qts but the level was about mid way between Min and Max. Looked at Fchat, saw mention that the difference btw min/max was 2 qts so I added about 3/4 qt figuring that would not over fill. But was now just over the "M" in max. Recheck Fchat for effects of overfiling (most said a little is not a big deal) but still I was bothered since not right. Note that I check oil per the manual, 15 min after shut down (although I do not see much difference on the dipstick after about 5 min). So I found a hose that fit the OD of the dip stick tube and reduced it down to my hand vacuum pump & reservoir and sucked out the necessary oil in a very quick, controlled and no spill manner.

I remove excess oil by mopping it up from the floor with an old rag

Patrick: thanks for the chuckle! You all - do have a good sense of humor. That works for my TR4 and some of my old Brit bikes but thankfully, not so much for my 308.

Or you can just keep driving until some of the oil burned off to the right level.

If you don't have a specialized pump to draw out the extra oil you can make one easily using a basic pump found on a lotion, or soap bottle you for sure have already in your house. Below is a photo of one to place a visual to what I am talking about and all you need to do is fit a longer tube (with an outside diameter that fits INSIDE of the dipstick tube), feed this tube down the dipstick tube, and pump out any extra oil you have. This is not the best way to drain the sump as you will be pumping until next year but it does work very well if you need to draw out a liter or less of oil.

I run an extra quart in my GT4 it helps on the hard turns for starvation. My car takes close to 10-11 quarts

No no noooo. Why do it for free when you can spend money for the same thing???:

Walmart - Marine Gear Lube Pump

(Actually, I own one of these things and use it to top-up gear oil (14 stokes per 4 oz).) (Fits nicely into the top of a 1L Red Line bottle).

update: I removed 8oz to change the level from above the M in Max to just under the Max line. Since this is a small amount but shows as a big change on the dipstick, I expect the oil level is now (correctly) below the bottom of the tube. Also, note that I used a larger hose to fit around the OD of the dipstick tube instead of a small hose inside the dipstick tube, so my hoses are relatively short with less cleanup and no risk of fouling the hose in the dipstick tube.

I think your over thinking this, but I would rather have a bit more than a bit less. I am not an expert but when the engine is running there is not that much oil in the pan

I think you are right. When I stop and quickly check the dipstick, there is no oil on it. After about 5 minutes, there is oil on the lower tip of the dip stick. After 10 minutes the oil is nearly at the "low oil" mark. At 15 minutes it is near the top "high" oil mark. After a night of sitting, the oil is several inches above the top oil mark on my 328. When I change oil it takes about 9 quarts.

After the oil is warmed up (thin), I just crack the drain plug loose and back it off until it starts to leak (just don't pull it all the way out !). Takes a few minutes to bleed a quart out, but easy enough.

After screwing back tight, just blast the area with aerosol brake cleaner to clean up --- easy peasy :).

Just to pour gas on the embers... What kind of 308 has an 8 quart oil change? My 1975 gt4 uses 9.0 liters - which is 9.5 quarts - when changing the oil and filter. If you follow the proper oil check procedure, checking the oil immediately after shutting down the engine the level is perfect.
As a point of fact, somewhere else in this chat is the direction of how to properly add the third line to the dip stick based on measuring the oil before installation

If you drive the car hard, this is cheap insurance. If I see the oil pressure flicker downward, I get chest pains.

I went with the Gleggy stainless pan baffle, but still run it a bit over full, "just in case"
