Duram Plummer, founder of Durametric, is currently working very hard on diagnostic tools for Ferraris, including one for the 456/550/575. Durametric has a very good reputation among Porsche owners for their pro and owner diagnostic tool packages for Porsches and BMWs.

    http://www.durametric.com/default.aspx

The good news is that the OEM Ferrari diagnostic tools initially appear to be simpler than those used by Porsche, BMW and Mercedes and Duram thinks he will be able to produce tools which can perform virtually all the functions of the SD-1, SD-2, and SD-3, depending on car model. The intention is to sell tool sets for each car separately, and you just buy the ones you need. Prices will be very competitive and Durametrics has the intention of producing versions for all the older models as well as the newer, SD-3 serviced models.

Because of the lower volumes involved, the tools will cost more than the equivalent Porsche tools (no surprise), but way less than I originally envisioned. Duram preliminarily estimates the 550/575M tool set (and all other tool sets) will cost less than $2000 each. Part of the increase is due to the fact that Ferrari tools used many more cable connectors than Porsche tools, which essentially used one central connector for all diagnostic functions.

Needless to say, this is a Godsend for small shops unable to afford an SD-1/2/3 set of tools, and for owners remote from a dealer or independent with the SD sets. Living in Albuquerque, I am really looking forward to buying a tool set for my techs to use on my car.

In the future, I can see an ad in FerrariAds for a car for sale that includes the Durametric Diagnostic Tool.

I also see a potential future sponsor for FerrariChat.

Durametric's current plans call for the following tool sets as their first releases:

    348/355
    456/550/575
    360
    430
    612
    599

used their stuff on my porsche, worked great, easy to understand.

Maybe not quite as complete as the Porsche shop diagnostics, but certainly did the trick for me EVERY time.

J.R., Dave- I already tattled on myself in the Rossa police thread.

Glad to hear the Porsche tool worked as well as I had heard it did. Your comments match Duram's exactly, Dave. He said the Porsche diagnostics were very complex, and his tool only did the major stuff an owner or small shop would want to do. The Ferrari tools should do just about everything. He was amazed at the amount of functionality and data in the 2 Mb and 8 Mb chips in late model instrument panels. Not present in any other maker's car he had examined.

The Durametric 6.0 Beta for Porsch is looking very promising and is closer to factory level Diag and programming work like I'm used to with Vag-Com. I'm a bit disappointed they wouldn't answer my questions regarding F-Car diag development when I asked 3 weeks ago.

Glad to hear it's becomming an option however.

Josh- I coordinated with Duram before posting this. He wants to keep it low key until the Beta testing is done and that will still be a bit further down the road. Just wanted to give everyone a heads-up to start saving their pennies.

It would be really nice if you could buy one and upgrade the software to another model as necessary without having to buy another full set.

    I'm ready for a 550 and 355 set anytime.

Dave- That may be possible since some of the cables are common. Keep your fingers crossed. Just like for the pros, the 430, 612, and 599 all use the same cables, I think.

    Taz,

As far as DIY'ER's go I'm pretty extreme. If they want/need a testor I volunteer. I'm always messing with something 550 now mostly but have friends who are always over with 3 series cars and one guy with a 456. I do gearbozes to engine rebuilds, race and a lot of stuff in between. I'm going to the deal with Nick up in NoCal end of June to see what the leonardo unit can do. SD2 is even backward compatible to the 348's which only were lame obd1. I had a buddy with sd2 finger a missfire then was able to nail down where in the chai it was coming from. With obd2 there is so much more wiring you can really nail down lots of potential faults with ease. Duram really has to get us access to adjust PIS on clutches and read fault codes for the F1 box and anything else that has a drive cycle readiness test attached to it as minimums.

Hey FBB, I'm planning on going to that too, maybe we could hook up, I'd like to have your opinion on my shock mount modification. Are you going to drive the 550 up here?

FBB- All in the works. Duram and I have discussed at length. Like I said, he thinks he can do all SD1/2/3 functions because the Ferrrari diagnostic tools are not that complicated.

Will be interesting to see what the Leonardo tool can do, but their emphasis has been on the newer cars like the California or 458, which use online tools instead of an SD, so may be really valuable to independents who can afford such a tool. For guys like you and me, likely out of reach financially, just like the SDs. We can afford $2K, maybe $3K, but $10K+, not for most of us, unless local owners pool their money to buy their techs one.

Thanks Taz, I'm glad to hear that duplicating the diagnostics aren't overly difficult. Gives me confidence that Duram's tool will be a useful purchase.

Personally I'm enthusiastic for Duram to release this product. I'll be purchasing the Beta the moment we're allowed to.

I agree with the guys that realisticly my greatest use for the tool is in regards to F1 systems. Realisticly I'd like to see this become successful enough to encourage Duram to offer at least F1/E-Gear access for the Maser and Lambo's as well.

The Porsche 5.0 was a bit disappointing as it was really for the enthusiast, and I'm much happier with the capability of the 6.0 Beta ( and will be much more so when it's completed).

Be sure to pass along our encouragement for his progress on this project.

The whistle is blown a little premature here. Currently the first beta test modules (for 360) are due out in the next few days. Each Fcar uses slightly differnt pin positions which complicate cabling and so on. At least that's my understanding after many conversations about this. Shops have been contacted for the beta testing already FWIW.

Brian- 456/550/575 shortly afterwards. They are making good progress, but, as mentioned earlier, the cables are a pain compared to their Porsche units. For the Porsches you can buy a 50' cable that allows you to hook up to a desktop. Will probably be a laptop for the Ferraris.

Swapped some tech data today with Durametrics. Duram thinks the 360 and 430 diagnostics tool sets should be for sale to the general public by the October timeframe. Moving along smartly. Beta gear for the 575M is going out to testers by next week.

I need one for my 430. So I'll have to wait till October. I need one now as some faults have come up and the nearest dealer is a whole country away :(

    Appreciate any updates. Thanks Terry.

Has there been any more news on when the scan tools will be ready? Is there someone at Durametric that a shop may contact to get more info on this project?

Project is moving along rapidly with the 360 first release still scheduled for this fall. There will probably be a special offer when it is first introduced and the price will be very reasonable. Here is their contact information. Very likely they will become an FChat sponsor.
