We were invited to a private art auction this past weekend in Sarasota. One of the featured artists was Duaiv, considered by many to be the most prolific living artist. He's an artist's artist as opposed to Peter Max who's more of a cultural icon artist to put it in comparison. Max was there too btw.

Anyway, we were talking about cars and the discussion of his 458 Spyder came up. He was comissioned by Ferrari to do an original work on one. I'm sure many of you have seen it, but it was actually cool to see it in person and talk with him about it.

btw - he's 71 I think, and he does drive in Race mode. He's turning it over to Ferrari in a couple of weeks, but will be receiving a Lambo soon after. He was commissioned for that too.

On the morbid humor side, some of us were thinking, "hmmm... small 70-ish Frenchman agressively driving Italian supercars in race mode with traction control off... our art investment could pay off any day."

Here's a pic of the car. I have several others but figured I'd hold in case this horse has been fully beaten dead.

I like it for what it is -- rolling art. The colors and forms actually work.

most prolific living artist?? please don't take it as an insult but what kind of idiot (who obviously has very little knowledge on art) would consider this unknown guy the most prolific living artist in the world? and artist's artist? i am not sure if a lot of artist know about this prolific creature that lives among us either..

look at the layer cheese cakes in his site.
Duaiv Official Website / Scenic Paintings

a prolific artist will not put 'sold' on his work in his own website, that smells desperation in selling his work.
and perhaps if he has a little bit of dignity he would not use large font to highlight his artistic break-through as he finally became us citizen since june 2011 in his bio page.

way to ruin a beautiful car with such tacky paint job. i don't care if it is ferrari's official commission or not, it is just bad taste.

So you call me an idiot and claim I know nothing about art, but I shouldn't take offense? Very typical behind the keyboard passive/aggressive child play. You may not know him...I'd certainly believe that, but he is very well known and celebrated in the art world and among serious collectors.

However, your expert critique is noted. Thank you Andy.

I do have several more. I'll post them up. I don't care who does it... Artist or Joe Blow... Im just not a huge fan of this sort of thing. It just looks like an afterthought, but I take it for what it is and appreciate it for what it is. There was a mix up at the event and there literally were no rooms available at the Ritz. Several collectors offered their suites but he said he was fine with where he was at... The Marriott Courtyard down the street! When he left, I swear I could hear him the entire way. He said he had different exhaust but there was too much of a language barrier to get details.

He also painted the buses at the Cannes film festival. They've all been dismantled and are now on permanent display.

sorry if my statement sounds aggressive to you. i was under the impression that it was something you have heard from the people around that circle, which was not coming from you.

but yea now that you clarified. maybe you should think about taking some art history classes.:)

sure if money making ability/exposure associated with famous brand names is the priority for assessing the level of success, instead of artistic value within the course of art history, he might as well be as famous as you described, and perhaps thomas kinkade is one of the many lords of 'fine art' that stands above the ordinaries.

serious collectors about anything surly will celebrate what they have been spending big money on. there is no doubt about that, just like those heated argument about p1's owners bragging how much better it's to lafe or 918 on the other side of the forum, when you can clearly see they are just bashing other cars as a justification of their own purchases.

i can bring along a lot of reasons why and how this guy is almost irrelevant in the art world with supporting argument , only if you want to go there.

I always wonder why one of these "current popular artists" do not paint a Still Life on the car instead of a bunch of lines, twirls and color splashes! I am pretty sure that a car with the Mona Lisa painted on it would not be considered art...at least by the majority of dealers/manufacturers that commission such work.
Personally, I would love to see an FF with a ghosted Mona Lisa in the hood.

I met Duaiv and his wife at Cavallino - both with matching blue hair - and they were very polite and accommodating. They took time to answer my questions, and they were as enthusiastic about their car as I was! He said he has an Aventador on the way, and an FF - both of which he plans to personalize the way he's personalized (t)his 458 Spider.

I first saw this car in the post office parking lot in West Palm Beach, a block away from my hotel. I didn't meet Duaiv until the following evening. I was so excited when I saw the car - it's so different and unique. The original color of the car is black. But whether a car is wrapped or painted, it's nice to see people go out on a limb and actually enjoy all aspects of a car like this, instead of being hung up on investment value.

At our dinner, he wore a crushed blue velvet jacket, blue Doc Martins, , the blue hair, bedazzled jeans... the works... though somehow it all didn't seem odd. They really were very kind and giving at our event like you experienced.

I didn't hear it myself, but the Lambo was said to be white... which may make for a better canvas so to speak. I don't know... we'll see. Again, not my sort of thing, but to each their own I guess.

At the event I attended, I was most surprised by Peter Max. Normally he rolls in, smiles, and leaves after 15 minutes or so. He ended up talking to us for about an hour... telling stories explaining concepts, techniques and all that. He took pictures with us and signed things. He was extremely personable and patient and pretty much didn't leave until no one had anything left to say.
