I looked at a 90 348 TS yesterday here in Az. and have a question for the Brotherhood. Is it common to have a small amount of rust in the door sill area where the weather strip is? I have looked at quite a few cars lately and almost all of them have this. I don't see signs of it anywhere else on the car. Is this something I should be concerned about? This particular car seems to be pretty nice with a full service history and a few ticky tacky things that you would expect on a 17 year old car. I appreciate your help as I make my journey into the Brotherhood.

Yes. The sills are absolute crap. When new, they are gorgeous. But they do wear pretty quickly and scratch/scuff.

If you buy the car, contact some of the local board sponsors about carbon fiber replacements. Cheap, easy, beautiful.

Are you saying the rust is typically just on the black sill plate? I was just a little concerned that it was a inner rocker panel. I've seen the CF replacements and think that's the only way to go.

My sills looked like crap, but the metal body underneath was fine. Don't try to 'inspect' the underneath unless you're prepared to fully replace the sills. They are very difficult to remove without destroying them.

Do what I did. Have them stripped then powder coated gloss black. Last a lifetime. End of the problem.

How do you get them off?

Mine have so rusty screws I can´t use a screwdriver anymore.
Have to drill them out.........and obviously you ruin them on the way trying to get them off the glue.

Is it possible to get them off in a condition where you can use them again?

Mine seemed to come off very easily, pulled back the rubber seal to expose about 3 (poss 4?) small screws per side. I had mine stripped then powder coated satin black, then glued the small edge rubbers and double sided taped the top ridged rubbers back in place. this was done about 5 years ago when I first got the car, they still look like brand new.

I must admit due to their exposed position and vulnerability to foot marks I do take the time to either remove or mask them (thick cardboard) every time the car goes in anywhere for work (e.g. annual test). IMO Carbon aftermarket sill plates look great and I will probably go that route one day (keeping the expensive to replace originals in storage).

Nice job Goth. Since you have access to a CNC machine, perhaps you should supplement your income and supply some custom parts for the rest of us????

Sounds good ;)!!! I have a new 5.2 twin bypass en-route to completion in the next few weeks ....... it will have monster flow and an all new, proprietary bypass valve design ...... completely eliminating that trouble prone and primitive 'butterfly' design ....
