So after i start my car (89' Mondial T) the red brake light at the top of the cluster as well as the amber ABS light south east, stay on about a minute or at least 30 seconds longer than any other warning lights. They go out about the time i pull out of the garage and they do go out together.

Just curious if this is normal?

I have an '88 3.2 with ABS and, yes, the light stays on for a few seconds longer than the others. Never had a problem tho...

Yup, but not that long. Maybe 15 seconds longer +/-.

    Drive on Captain!

Hmmm...that happened once and nearly gave me a heart attack. Have you checked the fluid level? The last lights to go out on our car are the yellow CELs...I always hold my breath waiting for them...but we are only talking a few seconds...We normally have a dark dash after 5 seconds max. The brake light flashes briefly and the ABS is on for one second.

The t has a complicated brake system that does not use engine vacuum. When you touch the brake pedal you should feel a result instantly. There is a separate valve for this and I do not fully understand it. At the end of last winter I took the car out for a drive and there was an obvious delay between the application of the brake pedal and a result. All I could think of was $$$$. Fortunately, after awhile it corrected itself. The only weakness of the brakes when working well is the anti-lock. If you bury the pedal (like when Bambi ran out in front of us) the tires will skid more than expected before the ABS releases pressure.
    Dave

Edit: Hey Ted I just saw your last post...maybe our car is the one that is not normal but in our case the brake and ABS lights are out right away. Again, do you have instant braking when you touch the pedal?...and I mean right now!

My ABS light stays on continuously... it even blinks in unison with my dash clock when it is reset... but my brakes seem fine.

I believe my problem is somewhere in the fuse box. The board has some burn marks on it and other electrical systems are on the blink. Hopefully a rebuild will clear things up.

I tried this test this morning, see pics below:

Pic 1 = in my garage parking brake off, started car, brake failure and anti-lock brake lights were on for 5 seconds, then went off.

Pic 2 = shows lights went off after 5 seconds as expected

Pic 3 = noticed however my speedometer and tachometer are not at zero when engine is turned off. Just noticed that after all this time???

Does anyone else's Mondi do that or is it just mine?

Pic 4 = "She's Gorgeous My Friends" quote of the day pose drove to work!

    thanks,
    Mike

The ABS and brake lights will go off in approx. 5 seconds (Mondial 3.2 12/97). The speedometer and tachometer are not zero when the engine is turned off (see pic).

Thanks, I feel so much better that my 88 3.2 is not the only one thats doing that. BTW, you have an 87 and the dash light layout is totally different from my 88, interesting!

I clearly have too much time on my hands...of course I had to shoot a quick video. The red brake light is left of the yellow CELs and the ABS is the amber light to the right in the tach. Our CELs are the last to go out and I am afraid they are telling me that there are stored errors....I DON'T WANT TO KNOW!!!!!

Interesting how Mondials, even of similar years, seem to behave a little different from each other. Part of their character I guess.

BTW, do you guys wait a few seconds in Run for the initial tests to complete before starting? I wonder if this could have an effect.

i shot a video with my phone but now in the process of trying to post it, do you have to send it to youtube first?

edit: i can't figure out how to do it so anyway... i counted 17 secs before they both turned off, thats a bit long i think.

Seems like even in the t model, Speedo & Tach does not start at ZERO! Plot thickens!
Nice video Dave, I've seen your how to latch the top video about 10 x, nicely done!

Drove my T to work today (taking advantage of the weather while I can). Break/ABS stays on for at least 5 and sometimes 15 seconds, always goes off before I can fasten my belt and put her in reverse. No worries.

    Dave -

I have to ask - did you blip the throttle right after you started or does your idle normally jump that high?

Yes, I turn key to on, not start, for a few seconds while I hear things 'clickin and whirin' then to on/battery start. Not necessary, I just like to see full charges to everything for about 2 seconds before flippin the switch.

this is on the 456 too.

PS: Yes you seem to be having too much time on your hands. give me one.

    Hi Dave,

Yes I do wait a few seconds in run position before starting. I used to have a Land Rover and if you went to crank without waiting to complete tests, you would get an ABS caution message.
So I kept the practice on all my cars.

No, I never touch the gas or brake when starting for fear of confusing the Motronic. When the car is cold the idle will go up like that. In the video you can see it is slowly coming down and after a short while it stabilizes around 1000rpm.

My 87 Euro spec 3.2 ABS light never comes on since I got the car early this month. Every time when I brake to stop the car I can feel the brake pedal "blips" softly for 4-5 times just before the car stops completely. Any idea what went wrong? thanks!

Abs braking was offered as an option for 87 3.2s and came standard equipment on all 88 models. Are you sure your 87 car has the ABS option?
My 88 ABS lights come on when key is in position II, heavy braking or when brake fluid is low.

I always turn the key and wait till the pump stops pumping.
I have noticed that the pump will take much less time if the car had been driven sooner than later.

By the way...... I have my brake fluid changed every year. Actually, I have the oil, brake fluid and gear oil changed every year.

    Who else does this?

    - Ron
